not sure myself maybe they are the tufted ducks that we hear about every now and again...

Mark ... the tufted ducks you speak of are actually accidentals from asia. Check a field guide. Ironically, their 'tuft' is barely visible. I did have the good fortune to see one once in all places in a bay 500 yards from J.F. Kennedy airport in NYC.

My friends at Cornell say these ducks in this thread are mutative - like them wisconsin frogs with 5 legs, 2 heads etc.

<font color="blue"> Here</font> is an interesting page about crested ducks with some pictures. There is a picture toward the bottom of a few ducks that approximate the coloration of the white ones under investigation.

It seems that any breed but the Muscovy can be bred crested given the proper genetic combination.
