spray, maybe till to disturb grass and weed roots, roll to compact, then add rock

is this in lieu of stripping that soil and putting down 6 inches?

I tried to calculate for my entire driveway, if the online gravel calculators are near correct they say Ill need roughly 150 ton to do 6 inches over 6000 square feet (500' x 12' width). That's why I'm saying 50 ton over 800' every few years seems nuts. I think I'll start with just expanding the turnaround for now, I can use a blade to smooth my existing drive. Maybe once I have a bit more experience and knowledge Ill tackle the long portion. I'm guessing I should ask people who build around here what the actual hell my driveway is made out of.

50 tons over my 800' driveway comes out to about an inch of material every few years. I'm sure I'm losing that to dust and sinkage. I know people that don't add any material, ever. They get ruts in the spring and wonder why. I don't get ruts and very rarely do I get any potholes.

Can you use a landscape fabric under the rock?

well hopefully my situation isn't as bad as yours. Ideally I think adding rock should be like every 5 years, if that

Can you use a landscape fabric under the rock?

There is specific road geotextile fabric that can be used. It's fairly expensive and I think each person needs to determine if they actually need it. It's probably not real necessary in more stable areas. One thing I didn't think about until now was you need to make sure the fabric is deep enough or you will tear into when scarifying your driveway.

I use the bucket and BB when stripping sod/overburden for driveway expansions/installs.

I’ll use Geotextile fabric based on subsoil conditions, to keep the rock from disappearing into the ground and stabilize crap soil.

If your in an area that has shale, and can get shale fill, it can be used as an acceptable base, below your stone and is usually cost effective.

Land plane is excellent for maintenance.
