driveway renovations

i am considering redoing my gravel drive way completely with sure-pac. now to keep me form mowing the better half of my driveway after a big rain storm i was thinking of cutting down 2-4 inches with a box blade.
is this necessary and will it make a big difference for the effort???
and are there any other important tips/techniques for a wanna be pro embarking on this kind of project.
any advice would be appreciated.
