I wouldn't think this can happen. While going through some light duty mowing, the engine compartment all of a sudden went really quiet but it was still running. Short while later, overheating began. I stopped it right away and was able to save the engine. It turned out that the fan assembly came off the pulley and the belt was just sitting there. I looked at it closer and it looks like the shaft actually sheared off (judged by what I saw where it broke off) leaving its end still inside the mounting hole. Has anyone seen this before? Do you have any suggestion on what to do next besides calling the dealer?

How about some pictures please. The shaft from the water pump and the fan blade is 3/4" in diameter on my NH TC 35. Could it have been that the 4 bolts that hold the shaft onto the water pump output pulley all fell out?

So, from the images, it looks like the water pump is intact. Note the shaft now ends almost flush with the backside of the pulley. I stuck my finger inside the mounting hole. It goes in about an inch and it's filled with grease and other gunk. There was a small metal piece that was in the gunk that I fished out of there (like the size of a 1/16" round or almost round thingy; it fell on the ground so I didn't actually look for it unless it's important).

I uploaded two but only one showed up. Here is a closer up of the fan assembly with the pulley.

Just called the dealer. He thinks the water pump is shot and he thinks the drive shaft did shear. That makes sense. That also explains why I was not able to stop a coolant leak by replacing the radiator hose. Any other ideas or comments?

My next question is: is the water pump something a somewhat handy homeowner can handle? Do I need special tools for this job on this tractor? The dealer says he needs to do this in his shop or it'll cost him more time at the site (towing included). I just had it in the shop recently for a radiator repair etc. I hate to have to spend another $600 get it right back in.

BTW, is that a decent quality after-market water pump I should consider? I think this one is just under $300.

New Holland used a lot of different engines in the small tractors over the years. Obtain the engine manafacture and model number then do a internet search you may find a aftermarket or OEM water pump for less than what the dealer is wanting.

Hey chanwmr, contact Tractor Joe at tractorjoe.com. They have new manufacture water pumps for the TC25D for $158.67, no core charge, plus shipping. I got my replacement water pump for my TC35 from AllStatesAgParts for $49.00 and that included shipping, but they don't show one for the TC25D.

For many years, Ford/New Holland have used Shibaura diesal engines in the scut and cut models, but I'm not sure about the tractors built since 2003. Don't worry about it, though, New Holland tractors are Premium, Top-Level tractors.

Good fortune!

Great! Thanks! Did you water pump come with the drive shaft? The picture on TractorJoe does show one.

Oh yes, I talked to All States and the guy says they have one in stock and it's already being held for someone (for $150 so it's consistent). He says I would have to call back to check because they cannot be ordered for some reason.

Yes, my new water pump looked almost like the one you need. Your old water pump may not be able to be rebuilt. I didn't think a wp could fail like you said it did. This is a simple task to do and you can start the disassembly after you have confirmed shipment of the new wp. You will want to do a really good coolant system flush before you put the new part on it and new antifreeze in it. There are more knowledgeable men here than me, but I will be glad to coach you through the job. I will also ask that the more experienced mechanics make their educated comments as necessary, please.

Good fortune!

The reason my replacement pump was so inexpensive is because the part number had been superseded a couple of times and All States had a bunch of an older part number to move.
