Grade 2 bolts are soft and used for shear pins. Not used as a normal fastener.

Grade 2 bolts are the most common fastener sold. It's what all the bins at the local hardware stores are full of. All the zinc coated ones with no markings are grade 2. Normally Grade 5 and on occasion grade 8 are used for shear pins.

Real hardware suppliers stock grade 5 as their go to nuts & bolts. Hardware stores typically sell grade 2 because their customers do not know the difference or if they do do not care.
