Might as well get two threads for one.

1.
I'm trying to figure the best method for draining the fuel from my F350. A tee a tube off the fuel filter?

Reason is we buy lot's of groceries. We earn "fuel points". I get up to $2.20 off a gallon for up to 32 gallons. I'd like to fill up, drive home, empty about 30 gallons into a storage drum. I can then transfer it to my VW which gets 44mpg lately.

2.
Does anyone here change their HPOP oil reservoir?
I've been reading about sludge buildup and need to do it on powerstroke forum. Seems easy, I know in theory it's the same oil that circulates thru the system, but if there's sludge why not get it out.?

1. There are several ways to drain the fuel I think an easy way would be to run a hose into the tank and hook it to a transfer pump or just simply siphon the gas out. I would be wary of using the truck's fuel pump for a couple of reasons the first is what king of flow rate would that pump be capable of and how long would it take to drain the tank. The main concern I would have is without knowing the characteristics for that pump if you were to run it open ended (without back pressure) for a long period of time I would bet you will be running the pump off it's curve and damage it. If low cost is your objective its hard to beat a siphon they have some that are supposed to keep you from getting a mouthful of diesel too.

2. It was always my understanding that the high pressure oil was common to the lube oil in the engine and that was why power strokes had a lot of concern with oil shear. So every time you change the oil while you aren't changing out all the oil in the engine, as it is circulating back into the sump it is getting replaced.

Why not just put a 30 gallon drum in the truck and fill it? I have a couple sitting around my shop right now. Its not the heavy. Drum is about 20# and diesel is 6.7# per gallon so 200#. I could lift that out if needed or better yet just lay a old tire on the ground and roll it off onto it. Thats what we have done many times with 55 gallon drums of fuel and oil products.

1 You could hook a line off of the bleed line for the filter but like was stated I don't know how the pump would react to open ended pumping as it places more of a load on that type of pump. Use a barrel like Chris said.
2 The only time I have ever seen sludge in a HPOP res is when the truck was severly neglected on oil changes. It is a total non issue as far as I am concerned, I have customers with 400k to 500k and countless hours idleing on locations with no problems. The IPR will get sticky also on neglected trucks. But if the oil is changed even close to the recommended intervals you will have no problems with any of the quality oils out there for diesel service. CJ

Price the onboard electric fuel pump , and your savings will same minor on the fuel costs. I would install an auxiliary fuel tank in the bed and fill it . Then it becomes an easy solution to siphon fuel out for the vw, with the f350 being higher.

As others have said, the HPOP and rails drain themselves thru the spillports in the injectors. So the oil in the system is always being replaced by oil from the pan that has been sent thru the engine oil filter. On HUEI fuel system equipped engines, oil quality, proper filtration, proper maintenance intervals are key to long service life of the system.
Currently, we have a 97 model with all original factory components in the HPO system that has 300K and counting that gets the oil changed once every 10K miles on dino oil.

Thanks.
1. Have not even tried the hose. All my other vehicles have an "anti-siphon" device.
Can't fill anything else - per the policy the fuel HAS to go into the vehicle, otherwise I'd just use jerry cans.
Installing an aux. fuel tank takes up bed space. Sometimes I need all I can get.

2. I know the HPOP oil is circulated, but on the other forum some posters have written of significant "sludge" found.

Lame policy, just run your truck low on fuel and fill all the way to the top to get the most of your discount. Note that your truck can be overfilled another 4.5 gallons after the pump clicks off. I always put 4 gallons in on top of the third click.

2) The HPOP oil does not need to be changed and anybody that suggests it does has no idea what they are talking about. The only reason that plug is on top is so that you can check the level of oil in the res and prime if necessary.
