Members: For 28 years I did okay w/ a Massey 35 and a single disc plow (well, sorta) Recently contracted 'Bocitus, an incurable form of Orange Malarial Fever (careful, the Net is no protection from the bug). So I picked up a M7040....will this puppy have the guts to pull a 2 bottom moldboard plow (yet unpurchased) in 1st or 2nd gear LR? Probably, but your comments will hopefully throw me into remission from my feverish look at the M8540. In the meanwhile, yours, chillin' & sweatin', bb

I hope you are only kidding about your illness. Regarding the two bottom plow, the M7040 with R1 tires should be able to handle it with no problem. Our old Massey Ferguson 1045 MFWD with loaded turf tires can handle a two bottom with no problems. The Kubota M7040 is much bigger. I also have a Kubota M8200 and the Operator's Manual has a chart for plows depending on the cutting width. You may possibly even go to 3 and maybe 4 bottoms with the M7040, but your dealer can tell you for certain what the limitation is depending on plow cutting width, eg, 12", 14", and etc. Good luck and get well soon..........
Mr Sunnyside: yeah, thanks for kind words, am joking about my bota lust. And for reassurance on the hp of the 7040...located a heavy duty used double plow for $350 basically for garden use. Now to use the ripper/ box blade on hay field that the wild hogs are destroying. thanks again bb

Seriously. It, of course, is going to depend to some degree on your soil type and conditions and whether or not you get 4WD. But the manual recommends no greater than a 3x16" plow. I'm in the market for a 3x14 to 3x18" plow right now. The Kubota manuals tend to be very conservative on their implement limitation recommendations. I would be more than willing to hook up a 4x14" to mine and I feel sure it would do just fine.
So, you're trying to decide between a M7040 and M8540? Have you checked out my old threads, "M series Snag!" and "A New Era Begins: M7040 Arrives!!"? They go through my whole thought process and the sometimes painful trials and tribulations of deciding on, and purchasing an M-series tractor. Mostly they're about choosing between the M8540 and M7040. I am particularly proud of the "New Era. . ." thread because at the beginning I attached a 6-page single spaced document that goes through my whole tractor purchase story.

Mr Glowplug: Thanks for your informative piece on your 7040. Glad to see we think alike on equipment. I have 127 acres, around 30 cleared, 20 in hay. Looks as if the 7040 will hold the job...I moved up from a mx5000 mainly for front loader work, digging 300-400 lb boulders out of the rough area of land (Ozark mt. top farm). Sometimes the 7040 feels a bit light on it's feet, hence thoughts of 8540, but impressive power and I can't really afford a trade in at 150 hrs. Just wondering about plow power, and thanks for the info. The world would probably be a better place (climate) if we could hold our wants and stick with our needs. The 7040 will be just fine I think. bb

I don't mean to try to talk you out of the M8540. It is one sweet tractor. It has so much: turbo, 12-speed transmission, more power! With 127 acres I'm sure you could find good use for it. But you would also be very happy and fully satisfied with the M7040 I believe. Good luck in your decision.

I will tell you my experience in going thru the same dilemma a couple of years ago when I was going to buy either an M5700 or M6800 cab tractor and maybe you can use it to your advantage. Dealer would have to order it since he did not have either tractor. However he did have a brand spanking new fully featured M8200 cab tractor that he just got in so I test drove it to get an idea what the M6800 would be like. We finally came to agreement on a deal in trading my L4200 for the M6800 so he ordered the M6800 with all the features the M8200 had. Dealer said it would be about two months for delivery.
Well, after about a week I kept thinking about how much more it would cost to move up to the M8200 which the dealer had. To my surprise he quoted me $800 more for the M8200. That was a "no brainer" for me. The dealer explained how he could do a better deal on the M8200 because of the "dealer plan" which the M8200 was on. I don't remember all the details as I was ecstatic at the time. So now I have the M8200 cab tractor and after 150 hrs I couldn't be happier.
