Hello there!

So, I have a dump trailer that has a single-acting cylinder on it and the pump/power unit went out last week. I went to Ebay, found a pump that matched as far as I knew and ordered it.

It came in today Link to Ebay item here and I realized the difference between a double-acting and a single-acting pump.

I could either return it and order the correct one, and delay my repairs, or I thought I might be able to install a double-acting on the single-acting cylinder. The gravity of the dump bed should be able to force the cylinder down just as it always has, assuming the valve is open to allow the oil to flow back into the reservoir.

So, my question is, is:

  • Will this pump valve remain open, meaning that when I release the up button it will allow the fluid to return to the reservoir? or will it close the value, holding the oil and require me to open the valve somehow.
  • Will there be a problem if I just cap the port for the top of the cylinder and perhaps adjust some of the electrical on the valve itself to not open that valve, or will this keep the bottom valve from opening for return oil?

I appreciate any suggestions you may have, thank you for reading.

1 I think the oil will need need to pass back through the other side of the pump & valve to lower.
2 If your cyl. is double acting, you could just add a hose to that end to the pump and have a "power down" trailer, that might be handy some times. This will allow for a smaller reservoir also. It looks like the single acting pumps cost just about the same as you have into this one. By the time you ship it back, the cost of a hose & a few fittings might be a "wash".

Somehow my reply disappeared. It is for sure a single-acting cylinder.

The remote seems to only opens one valve at a time, so I was thinking of just rewiring the remote so the down button doesn't activate the motor.

I tested the electrical with a meter, so when I say it only appears to open one valve, I mean that it only activates one valve with current.

But your pump's valve has 2 magnets right? Each direction or up & down. I think I'm missing something in your 2nd post.

And :welcome: to TBN!

That should work just fine.

Two magnets, one that activates on up and one that activates on down.

I have my pump wired so that the solenoid just opens for gravity down and the motor doesnt run.

a local new pump is for sale at good price that if I purchase will put me in same boat..... single acting cylinder, but double acting pump. (2 solenoids)

do I understand this right if only one hose goes to OEM cylinder (power up.... bleed down):

. rewire controller so that down button does NOT activate motor... but activates only the solenoid (that sits in path with hose attached) thus, opening solenoid up and allowing fluid to bleed back?

well that went fast... seller posted and sold this on christmas day within an hour of posting it.

but that being said someone else will likely have same question in future since double acting pumps are mostly what is available these days.... thus question above still stands for those folk.

As I understand your question, yes that should work.
