Why are these people carrying a gun with a chambered round and no safety on????

There are many guns that don't have a safety. If the gun is carried in a good quality holster that protects the trigger from being accidentally pulled, and the gun is a fairly modern design that isn't susceptible to drop firing, then it's not considered dangerous.
The situation in this story has something super goofy going on.
Are there any revolvers made which have what is considered a safety?

Or why would a gun be stowed like that with a chambered round in the first place. Agree, something is not adding up.
Maybe the dogs leg was tied to a string tied to the trigger.

Single action revolvers require the user to manually pull back the hammer for each shot. I don't think they are very popular. You see them a lot in old westerns.
Actually they aren't that uncommon. The Ruger Blackhawk and Single Six are very popular handguns, although maybe not as much as they were 30 years ago. Also the new Bearcat, which has gotten me thinking that maybe I don't have enough guns after all. The difference between them and the old style western revolvers is the hammer transfer bar; there's nothing against the hammer when you are carrying. Supposedly the old time cowboys carried a ten dollar bill in the empty chamber; they called it "burying money." Apparently they didn't worry much about reloading under fire.
