Yeah, that's a weasel. I saw a few when I was a kid, but they were much larger, about a foot long. One killed a cat of ours, according to my mother. Haven't seen one for 30 years. Farmers had lots of trouble with them killing poultry. Interesting animals. Thanks for the pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Contact the local animal control officer and possibly they will either loan you a trap or them might come out and trap it for you. There is no way that I would allow that weasel to live on my property very long after reading how they go after prey. I don't believe in disturbing wild life in their natural habitat, but when they decide that my back yard is there natural habitat, they must be removed. I had a family of snakes living in my bulkhead cellar stairs above the door into the cellar that kept the mice in check. Until it got cold this past fall, they were allowed to remain against the wifes desires. If it isn't harmful to me or my pets, it may remain... if it is harmful to either of us, it will leave one way or another. I relocated more porcupines through the years than I want to count. Now, there is only one left in the area. He/she is very clever... has successfully avoided being trapped. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If its primary prey is mice and voles, might want to just leave it alone.

If he could take the Texas heat, he'd get fat on my place. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wow, Dave, that's pretty interesting. Even in the full sized pictures, it still looks like a ferret, though maybe a bit shorter. Very cool. I didn't know there were weasels in Northern Illinois.

Cliff, are you serious!?! There are weasels all over Northern Illinois, most seem to live in Chicago. Flip on the channel 9 news and just wait for any politician to open his mouth. I swear they look just like Dave's pictures! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If that's the least weasel, then that dog dang sure doesn't want to mess with the MOST weasel /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just getting here to read this thread and my first thought was a mink. We have lots of them around here and looks a lot like them. Just a thought.
