Tractor
(Kuboto L3400) (Ford 1900 4WD w/FEL) (Deere X748SE) All bought new
I have had an L3400 HST for a few months now. I have noticed that when I push the clutch in the engine idles very quietly. When I let the clutch out there is a rattle that starts. I've never owned an HST and have assumed this is normal. Does anyone else notice this?

Hi Allen,

I've had my L3400 for only 10 hours, and I've noticed the same thing since the first day. It's the first tractor I've owned, so I've got no reference if it's normal or not. I'd be interested to hear what others say.

My B7610 does the same thing. It rattles when it sits, and whines when it moves. It's called character.

I am familiar with hydraulic whine, that does not bother me. I was wondering what the rattle is. Maybe the pump or an over running clutch that chatters when idling. If it is normal for the L3400 I guess I won't worry about it. I was just curious as to how common this rattle is.

Mabe too much free play in clutch pedal resulting in clutch fork not touching throw out and causing bearing or fork to rattle.

I've been concerned about this with my B2710 for quite a while. Same thing. Clutch in... purrs right along. Clutch out... all kinds of racket. And I get a weird "knocking" in the rear end after I've been running under load (ie. the box scraper). I'm pretty sure it's nothing in the rear end, but is actually sound travelling down from closer to the front.

As Boomer suggested, I looked at the free play on the clutch very carefully and that wasn't it. I'm thinking it's probably the ball couplers on the drive shaft.

Hi Slim,

I wonder if the knocking is related to thinner oil from heat.

When I first start mine it does not make any rattle. Is starts after it warms up and the oil gets thinner. I have not worked it very hard yet.

I guess it is nothing to worry about.

You're not talking about the little hook that is to hold the clutch pedal down rattling are you? When you shove the clutch down, you would be holding that little hook still, but when the clutch is up, mine rattled until I put a rubber gasket over it.

I went out and checked the clutch hold down pin. That is not the rattle I'm hearing on my L3400.

Bummer /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Sorry, that was my guess. I suppose I don't win the prize. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

From the sounds of the others, it doesn't sound fatal though.

Check the transmission range lever. Sometimes on my B2710 I will hear the lever rattling against the sides of the sheet metal slots that indicate which range you are in. This usually only happens when I am bush-hogging on rough ground and then it is just intermittent. Just a guess because mine does not make noise otherwise.
