Does Roundup go bad?

I don't think it ever goes bad...if it did..I think all the cancer it is responsible for would be drastically reduced.

I use 41% RoundUp to control invasive Glossy BuckThorn in a problematic area. Cut and squirt method. It seemed to become less effective after several years and I asked the exact same question on a foresters forum. Interestingly I was told that it does not go bad with age. But there is a big problem with it - if used repeatedly in the same area the target plants develop a RoundUp tolerant strain relitively quickly and it was advised not to use it for repeated applications in the same area.

I use the HDX 41% 2.5 gal concentrate. Makes 200+ gallons at a fraction of the name brand stuff. Takes me about five years to use a jug, stored in a garage in PA. Takes a week to work, but it always works.

Just found a new jug at HD on closeout for $29. Assume it was old stock, but I have high hopes

Best and safest way to use it is to cut and paint the stump with concentrate.

I've never had concentrate go bad. Mix will get stringy stuff in it, which you can fish out to not plug your sprayer.

Ralph

 . . . yeah, the stringy stuff that plugs up your screen in your sprayer head . . . I use the most concentrated . . . still gets "stringy stuff" in the head, no problem clean it out and go along with your day.

what do you use as a surfactant

Dish-washing liquid soap has always worked for me on a big job with the pump sprayer.

Otherwise I just use a 'cap' full or two + water in a reusable (original) spray bottle and 'hit' the centre of the plant stock, down low. Either way, 5-10 days 'til it's dead or dying.

Patience, I keep telling myself.

You aren't supposed to let it freeze but I don't know what the result would be. I've used some three years old, but never frozen, and it works just fine.

Roundup does not kill as fast as 2-4D does. If you are getting real fast kill with Roundup normally is a burn down and not a real kill. Real kill takes longer, burn down often kills leaves and not the plant.

For the years I've used Roundup (a long time!) it has always been stored in my unheated garage and temps around here go down to -20 for a week at a time. Of course, I've never looked in the jug to see if the concentrate froze. But I've used Roundup that was 5 years old that was still just as effective as it was new. And I'm another one of those who has never seen Roundup kill anything in 24 hours. I usually see wilting a few days later but the plant doesn't appear to really be dead until nearly 2 weeks have gone by.

Thanks. Maybe I'm just impatient. Not a big roundup user, but thought the large areas we killed off to plant last year got dead pretty quick. Maybe just the type of vegetation there or being warmer/drier time of year.

But good to know - cheaper to get a bigger jug this year, but was afraid if storing over winter ruined it would be wasteful.

What was the temp when you sprayed?

It usually works best above 70 degrees. It will still take time.
