Dodge Intrepid - First car, what do you think?

The intrepid is a good car. Bought a year old one off a rental fleet with some of the original warranty. I've had it for 14 years and it has 210k miles on it. No major repairs - most expensive was an oil seal leak. We still have it and recently drove it from Florida to Texas. Keep up on the maintenance and it will be a good car. (Mine is a 3.5 engine)

I've had a 1998 Intrepid in the family since new. From the tidbits of information I've gathered over the years the 2.7 and 3.2 were chryslers first engines totally designed inside a computer. The oil passage ways were designed very 'tight' with very little tolerence for any sludge narrowing of the passage ways. It seems the 2.7's were more suceptible to the narrowing of the passage ways, than the 3.2's. Although the 3.2 in my Intrepid locked up at 85,000. My advice is to use synthetic oil (I learned the hard way.) Replaced the engine with a factory authorized rebuilt engine and it's still running strong today with 165,000 miles on the odometer.

I'm pretty sure when you say a 3.2, you mean a 3.5 liter engine. As far as I know, they only put the 3.5 and the 2.7 in that vintage of the LH chassis. I think the predecessor to the 3.5 was a 3.3 engine, but I don't think it was in the LH platform at all.

Yeah, the 3.5l was only in the R/T model until 2003 when they dropped that model and put the 3.5l in the ES model and dropped the 3.2l.

All I have to say is better you than me. I would not have a chrysler product on the yard. The only good thing in the line up is the diesel cummins and I would not buy the truck around it to get the good drive train.
The resale on Chrysler is also great til you go to sell or trade. my 2 cents only.

No point in brand bashing.

They all have pros, and they all have cons. Thats life and thats why we have choices and the freedom to choose:thumbsup:

You can say "I would not own a (insert brand here)" BLAH BLAH. Hogwash. They are all reliable when cared for and all are junk when abused/neglected.

Each brand has certain models better than others.

And you'd find some who would say the same thing about a Ford, or a Chevy, or any other brand you can name. No logical reason at all; just that most of us do not select vehicles based on logic, but instead based on emotion. And of course the vehicles change over time, just as our opinions do. I've owned at least 5 Chrysler products and had pretty good luck with all of them. I also had a Ford that was as bad a lemon as ever came off an assembly line in the USA. For about 25 years you couldn't have given me a Ford product, but now I've been driving Ford products for the last 20 years and have had good luck with all of them, too.
