Curious how things are with the IFS lifted that high. Did wheel travel increase? How is the handling?

For the price, handling, and overall performance off road and on, I dumped the IFS in my last truck, a Ford F250. I swapped it to a straight axle. I was very happy with it after that. Mine was a simple swap though; everything was a bolt in replacement.

Just curious...

I'm really getting tired of this "your killing the plannet" type attitude. We live in a free country to do what we feel nescisary for our lives, one of those perc's is being able to drive what makes us comfortable. We should be able to do so without getting the generalization of "YOU DRIVE AN SUV THERFORE ARE KILLING THE PLANET" from every do gooder out there. The FACT has been pointed out on many of the last 13 pages, that it isnt the SUV that is soley whiping out the future oil resources. Those that own them feel they have a need, dont chastise them, many of them get better than 20mpg. We are in a time where the rest of the world is catching up to us. You have many other countries whos need for oil is growing at extreemely fast rates causing us to feel it. Some of these countries would laugh at our cries of $3.00 gasoline. We still live in a great country where things are beter than anywhere else in this fast changing world. Please get over it or try living somewhere there is a true concern over oil. Maybe we could crack down on all the 25yr old imports that burn more oil than gas?

There I feel a little better. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

RobertN,
Its a totally different IFS on the 2wd, the 4x4 are solid again. Great ride, plenty of room, will tow nearly anything and 20mpg if you drive it right.

I think the rest of the world is still looking at the fact that the US has 5% of the world's population and uses over 25% of the oil produced. They consider this an inequity - I don't.
My feeling is that most of the oil being produced in the world today is because American companies went out and found it, found and developed the technology to both get it out of the ground and refine it as well as use it. Most of those countries very quickly nationalized those American companies efforts - took the technology for their own use, and now complain about us. It's all very wrong IMHO..............

I think it will all work out in the end tho, their economies will change too. And either other sources will be found, other technologies will be developed and so on. I'm not worried about it...........and I really don't care what other people think about what I drive............

Audi allroad - 250 hp twin turbo V-6 gets 16- 22 mpg (our "SUV")
Lexus ES300 - 200 hp V-6 gets 18 to 26 (Daily driver)
Tundra - 285 hp V-8 gets 16 mpg - period!
69 Jag XKE, 250 hp I6, 15 mpg -maybe!

Vin, Lawrence of Arabia was also an American, no? That guy who helped obtain drilling contracts for American companies?

Robert - sorry, I was mistaken. I phoned the local dealer and he said there have been diesel Excursions for several years, but '05 wil be the final year for them. Today I was next to one with the unmistakeable diesel sound. I couldn't find a diesel logo on it, only 'Eddie Bauer'. Maybe I've passed them without recognising them.

And I saw a Hummer on the road today with a commercial logo painted in the windows. The business was a ...

While Ford puts a deisel emblem on the Super Duty's, they have never put them on the Excursion. The same is true for the Triton V10 emblems. Many Excursion owners have corrected this mistake on their own.... as I have. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

RobertN,

Wife absolutely loves it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif My brother and I put it on. It is a 6" Pro-Comp lift with 35" tires.

My brothers Sub has a 4" lift with 33's,,, so naturally mine had to be "bigger". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Handling is great, and the wheel travel seems to be more, but without actually measuring the stock travel, I do not know.

It is very hard for me to get her out of it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif It is her back and forth to work vehicle,,,,,,, thank goodness it is only about a 8 mile round trip. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I guess an "illogical" vehicle choice is any choice you wouldn't make.

We have a Yukon XL that costs about $80 to fill up, and gets about 16mpg. My full-size pickup gets about 18mpg. Since I commute in my truck I am considering getting a small car, but it would be extremely painful to give up the big SUV.

The fact is, big SUVs ARE safer. I have been rearended in a Suburban that would have totaled a small car, but resulted in only a few scratches on the rear bumper.

Vin, with all due respect, if an SUV is irresponsible as a means of transportation, how do you justify that big honkin house boat? It's got to be a fuel hog. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Or should our concern for the planet only apply to SUV's?

With all due respect to everyone, Vin was correct that my comments were/are confrontational. But in their context they certainly made a point and that point is that the concept of the SUV as an irresponsible vehicle is simply silly. If you want to get into a discussion about 'fuel economy' or about 'fair share of the world's resourses' then we could all at least agree to be genunie about the discussion. SUVs are today's station wagons for families, they are need vehicles for some, status vehicles for others, and for many folks outside the USA they are symbols of American gluttony and greed (that comment is NOT directed at Vin, but is a general world view held by many)

What makes me nuts about the entire concept of banning SUVs or criticizing them are the folks who are totally dishonest about energy consumption. I just returned from the Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne where I was attending some board meetings, I had a discussion with someone about world resourses the night before leaving. As I was checking out of the hotel so was she. She was traveling with 3 other people. They had 2 Lincoln limos lined up for the 4 of them. One took them, the other was packed with luggage. She was flying back to Pennsylvania in a private jet with the other 3 folks. That jet probably consumed more fuel in that flight than a Hummer H1 Alpha would consume in a year. So when you talk fair use consumption or fuel economy, then be honest.

Now I also think it is silly what people do when they buy vehicles that cost more than they can affort, and they buy them as status symbols, and they then can't afford the gas at the pump, but that is a whole discussion on personal fiscal responsibility. And it is safe to say those people are morons.

But I think most of us fall into the category of buying what is appropriate for our needs. And sometimes a small fuel efficient car simply does not work for what we need a vehicle to be used for.

/ Do you own a SUV? #136
Vin, since the thread was about SUV fuel consumption I assumed that was what we were talking about.

What I don't understand is why every alternative fuel/vehicle is shut down
//

Imagine a scenario where a new cheap fuel cell technology can replace gasoline for power in vehicles.... the oil industry would go into large scale depression and so would the economy of the US. Our economy is currently based on overindulgence and waste. Take both of those away and we go into a recession.
We walk a very fragile economic line.

Ben, the key word used here is cheap and that seems to be the real problem. Even with fuel prices that are double and nearly triple the fuel prices we see in the USA, there are no cheap alternatives used in places like Europe or Australia. So from a global standpoint gas, even at $3, $5, or even $7 a gallon is still cheap compared to some of the alternatives.

I run a fleet of trucks, I could possibly switch them to propane or natural gas. The problems I would encounter are astronomical in terms of costs. While it is technically possible to convert my fleet, the cost per truck makes it prohibitive to do so. Then we enter into the logistics of refueling because that is not something that could be done just anywhere. And add to that the fact that the range the truck can travel is dramatically reduced. There is no viable option other than diesel for me right now and I looked.

For our sales cars I looked at hybrids. Plain and simple they cost more to run in total operating costs than they are worth. We've run numbers on them and the cost to replace the batteries makes them a very unattractive option for anyone who drives a lot of miles. It is actually cheaper to pay more for gas and operate a traditional small car like a Ford Focus than it is to operate and drive a Prius.

Yes it is also cheaper to drive a beater guzzler that is paid for and buy high gas for it than to buy a new vehicle that gets more mileage. Lets see 3k for a beater, with liability only insurance vs 27k for new efficient auto......buy lots of gas with the 25k difference /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
We are sort of stuck with where we are for some time to come.
