Polls can be swayed to reflect what ever the pollster wants.
Mostly by people with an agenda. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Take that poll in Texas and see how it comes out. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

/ Do you own a SUV? #85
Ok, so I believe that was Washington DC. Correct?

Anyhow, have you been to DC? This is the typical congested city scenerio I hinted to in my earlier post. Naturally people that live in these extermely congested, short travel time areas would not benefit from an SUV.

I'm not going to go into too much detail but this poll makes about as much sence as why somone in Miami Florida doesnt see the need in a snow mobile.

Darn Vin, you've been on your high horse lately. Is the winter weather down under getting to you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Note the funny faces .... that's a joke.

Yeah, its funny that here in OZ it would not be considered being on ones "High Horse", one of the majority here.

( It is by far a minority of scientists that don’t agree with global warming.)

And I'm one of them, at least in the sense you're speaking of Vin. The earth is indeed incrementally warming, and has been ever since coming out of the last ice age 8,000-10,000 years ago; an insignificant amount in geologic time. Volcanic eruptions have put more CO2 in the atmosphere than man could ever dream of.

( I will not talk about this subject again on TBN)

Probably good advice; I gave up responding to any of the energy/fuel price threads, it's just not worth it.

I've taken a very hard stand here on this thread regarding SUVs, perhaps because I own 3 of them. But right from the start this thread was ANTI-SUV for no legitimate reason. SUVs were singled out as fuel hogs, but that is not always the case and many are in fact pretty decent when it comes to fuel economy. Not great, but not as bad as the rap they get.

In reality if the thread would have been ANTI-GAS GUZZLER then I probalby would not have jumped as hard as I did. And I suspect others feel similarly. Many small SUVs get 30+ mpgs. For the most part Mid-Size SUVs get 20-to-30 mpgs. In terms of vehicle fuel economy, many cars are worse than SUVs and many are better.

But what has happened is that some folks take a look at a HUMMER or an EXCURSION and see the humongeous sizes of those things and they get a visceral reaction to them and they hate them. So they become ANTI-SUV. And that blind uneducated attitude is what I oppose.

Now I look at Vin and his postings and they make perfect sense to me. Some folks agree with the theory of global warming, some folks don't, but the reality is Vin is pointing out what many of us believe. And that is fuel efficiency is a valid concern, as it care for the planet. And to those points I will agree 100% and support his views. But to the folks who make blanket statements about SUVs, well I think my prior posts have described my thoughts.

This is a bad thread and should have been deleted a long time ago. Just my opinion that is all. As far as any poll the people taking the poll can play games with any poll. I have a SUV and a large Pickup. Gas hogs in most peoples opinions. But I am not sure really why the people that hate SUV's hate them. I have some opinions on why but won't post them here.

About a year ago one of my employees got rear ended by another car. He was stopped at a stop light and yes he had one of my companies vehicles which was a Chevy Tahoe. Now it is my understanding at least in Minnesota you hit someone in the rear you are at fault. This dingbat lady who hit my employee in the rear tried fighting her ticket and the fact she had to pay the damages because my employee had a """"SUV""". To me that whole thing was dumber than a box of rocks. If I want to drive a SUV I should have that right to drive one. If I want to pay $70.00 to fill it up that is my business. If someone wants to drive a little car and pay $30.00 to fill up that is your business. Just don't condem me because I drive a Suburban. And as far as that poll, I don't believe it for one minute when I still see people driving the SUV's all over the place.

Ok, now I feel better.

I think it's a great thread, heaven forbid we all might have a differing opinion. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It's interesting to see other folks take on a topic.

I've enjoyed this thread too.
I'm all for SUV's ...but I do not own one. I do not see them as a status symbol in any way. Who wants to drive what everyone else is driving? Maybe a Hummer is seen as more of a status symbol to some, but it sure does not impress me.

I'm just glad they have not targeted the vehicles with the worst milage of all. Boats. I get 2 to 3 mpg, and thats if I'm not pulling a tube, skier or wakeboarder. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My dad took me fishing in the early '60's in our 63 ford wagon with the woodgrain sides & the AM radio with the Indians baseball games blasting through the open windows of that giant station wagon..............I do the same thing now with my kids.........minus the wood grain...........My wife does have a jeep cherokee (4x4) which we get out in the winter..........but other than the 4x4 it's still a "station wagon" (really)........with less room than the '57. Have things changed all that much ?? We need a large vehicle to haul the 4 of us & all our stuff to all the school functions..........Yes a honda civic would do it..........but are 3 trips in the honda to do what we can do in 1 trip with the larger vehicle cost effective for us........NO...........Do I like the price of fuel ?? Not really........but I still need to transport my family....................

We had a 59 Nomad wagon when I was a kid, Dad had a mattress made for the back so the kids could sleep on long trips.

Vin. You don't understand.

To engage in Profligate Consumption is a basic birthright of all Americans. ( 1 ) This right is mediated to some extent by success or lack there of in a second American birthright, the right to strive to accumulate excess wealth. The notion, basically anti-American, of a Limited Resource, has been used in only isolated ways to restrict the Right of Profligate Consumption. In certain western states, for instance, Profligate Consumption of water has been curtailed to some extent by definition of Fresh Water as a Limited Resource. Petroleum ain't there yet, and the idea that burning fossil fuels has some negative impact on the environment somehow implies that other Natural Resources, like Fresh Air and Reasonable Weather may also be somehow Limited.

1 . In this context, American with a capital A refers only to citizens of the United States of America, and explicitly excludes citizens of those benighted countries of North, Central and South America which have not yet formally recognized their vassal status with respect to the United States of America, the sole remaining Super Power.

I own one of those god-awful Excursions. Actually, I love my Excursion! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I have long ago tuned out the retoric about them.

The Sierra Club has continued to rag about it. Too bad they don't do it honestly. They always talk about the 10 mpg environmental hazard. But, 55% of all Ex's built were diesels, that get nearly 20 mpg. They never seem to mention that. The only way I can get (as low as) 10 mpg on my V10 gasser, is pulling a 10,000 pound load of firewood. The Excursion is nothing more than an F-250 with back seats. I've never heard the Sierra Club complain about the F-250. It's gets the same mileage.

I'd love to have a 30, 40, or 50 mpg vehicle, but they don't make one that can deliver a hundred cord of wood a year.
