Do you know what the purple paint law is?

As I mentioned before... when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Just because "that's the way it is here", don't mean I'm going to assume it's that way when visiting your state. (I don't think that orange stripes would suit me.);)
Agree. I think a pink jump suit with ankle irons is more your style….
You are falling prey to assuming local customs over written laws. I would bet your state protects landowners from trespassers and your “defense” before a magistrate would fall short of a conviction dismissal of trespassing .

You would lose that bet. I have posted our laws several times here and in other threads. I have also read and posted laws from other states.

What I find ironic is that in 362 posts, nobody has stated they have the right to go onto your land without permission... a sure sign that private property rights are still alive. Yet too many posters seem to feel they should be able to tell others what to do with their land; i.e., not allow access without permission. If John Malone is willing to let us use his million or so acres in Maine and New Hampshire; who are you to imply that he doesn't have that right?

I had to google that word before I realized I had it.
Yes, and some of the posters here certainly display those tendencies, as they display their need to control others.

If purple paint makes you feel good - paint away. More than obvious by this thread - a whole lot of folks have no idea what purple paint means.

I have a barbed wire fence around my property to keep the neighbors cows in their place.

Cows don't know Purple Paint either ............

Up until a few years ago I owned 280 acres of land inside the Ozarks national forest. My father homesteaded the land before it became a National forest but then moved and for the last 85 years we have only sold timber off it every 20 years except for the few times I went trail riding there.

90% of the property in the National Forest is gov't owned and only about 10% privately owned and much of that by people like me who do not even live around there. The gov't allows people to use their land, hunting, camping, hiking, canoeing, trail riding etc. Most people who own forest land such as I had did not have it fenced or marked in anyway and it is about impossible to tell where forest land stops and private land starts.

Our family never had any desire to keep people from using our land as we felt blessed to be able to own property others would enjoy using. That is, until a local wrote me and wanted a hunting lease on the land and I figured why not, I can use the money. I leased it, he posted it and shortly I started received letters and calls from other locals who were outraged that they could not hunt on the land anymore since they hunted there all their lives. Not needing any more enemies in my life I put it up for sale and sold it in a few years. In the last 10 years I have seen many more posted signs than I ever did before in that area.

Moral of this story: I don't know. It just seems like people are OK as long as you give them what they want.

Your previous post was also nonsensical. “When in Rome…” means to follow local laws and traditions. That means you should get familiar with them. If you visit Malaysia you’d better not chew gum in public…..and they don’t care that you “didn’t know about it.”

I’ve got a co-worker who owns land in Montana. His gate has a sign on it: “This gate is closed for YOUR protection.”. Ten feet inside the gate is another:

My family also owned land inside the Ozark Nat’l Forest. Twice in 30 years someone unknown harvested all the timber on our land.…so we got rid of the land by donating it to the Nat’l Forest for One Dollar. The timber has not been harvested since. (Don’t tell me the timber thieves “didn’t know”.)

Had you read my entire post rather than tken it out of context; you would know what I meant.

I am allowed access to private property; we have several million acres where we are allowed to recreate. If I go to another state I don't expect it to be the same way; I would have to get to know the laws and customs first.
Yet many people here seem to think that just because things should be the same way everywhere, that they are in their little corner of the world.

I don't understand why so many posters feel they have the right to tell somebody else that they can't allow people access to their land.
You don't own it; it's none of your business what they allow, any more than I have the right to tell you that you need to allow somebody else on yours.
