Do you know what the purple paint law is?

The Tennessee version of the law states printed signs must be present at major entry points and these signs must state that purple stripes denote the no-trespassing property lines.

(2) Places identifying purple paint marks on trees or posts on the property; provided, that at least one (1) sign is posted at a major point of ingress to the property in a manner that is reasonably likely to come to the attention of a person entering the property and that the sign includes language describing that the use of purple paint signifies “no trespassing.”

Is there this huge amount of people wandering around not knowing where they are going or who's property they are on? I just can't imagine that some purple paint will deter people like that.

As said before, it not so much deterrence, it’s giving notice (which should deter, too). Purple paint just makes it simpler, cheaper, easier than all these signs.

Just make a sloppy sign...the cruddier the better. "N0 TrePsAsSiN", brushed on, dripping red paint. Empty whiskey bottle & couple empty 00 buck 12 ga shells at base.

Stange, didn't have a clue that animals could read no tresspassing signs or have a clue about puple paint on trees or posts meaning you should not tresspass. At the end of the day, you don't need any purple painted trees or posts to shoot a dog or any other animal you feel is a threat to you on your OWN property.

I'll be darned, you guys are always a blessing. My wife has asked me multiple times what the purple paint on nearby trees is for and I mumble something about marking trees for the utilities to take out (cause I didn't know).

I'll get to painting:)

Best,

ed

I thought that was worded rather oddly, but it went along with the rest of what I was trying to point out.

Same here, as long as you don't vandalize, dump trash or steal something I don't see why some people get their shorts into such a knot over it.
In fact, in my state if you have your land in current use (a tax category that reduces property taxes on parcels of land over a certain size), you are not allowed to post it to foot or equestrian traffic (though you can prohibit motor vehicle accesss).

I live in N.H. and had no idea we had such a law here until just now. Indeed, before reading this thread I had no idea what a "purple paint law" was...had never heard of it before, had to Google the term. I'll bet 99% of the population doesn't know either.
Seems stupid to me, how are people supposed to know what that means, it sure wasn't well-publicized.
I think that a lot of trespassing laws and viewpoints are go back to colonial times; New England laws were based on old English rules, some dating back to the Magna Carta. As you go farther west attitudes seem to be shaped by the times and ideas of settlers and those who went before them.

Another point about liability when allowing access, which has been brought up before; many states have strong laws protecting landowners, if somebody gets hurt while recreating on their land. If you sue and lose, you pay the landowners expenses. That keeps the ambulance chasers away... since the law was passed here over 40 years ago there has never been a successful lawsuit.

I just read about this purple paint law :) In Australia most people would laugh themselves silly after reading this. It's just astounding. For new laws you could bring mauve, pale purple, mulberry, Northwestern Purple and a dozen others (reference: Shades of purple, Shades of purple - Wikipedia).
Then what about those that are a color blind? They won't be able to interpret the signs correctly. Good reference and example here: Coloring for Colorblindness
Have fun with your purple laws :)

Around here, purple paint would leave people to assume you are a University of Washington Huskies fan. In the Eastern half of Washington State that might be an un-wise move.

On one road by our property, I never replaced the gate which had the posts removed by the untility company for a new pole. It's open for anyone to drive on in an open field to a much large tract of open space "down back".

Only person who will use that road is my neighbor's friends, at night, if they want to do some coon hunting. My neighbor can use my property because he uses common sense, and he knows my rules.

Even the utility company knows to call me before they go down that field if they want to look at a power line down back.

General rule of life is don't mess with a mans dog, wife or his money (not in that order LOL). Land is a part of money LOL
i heard it was

don't mess with a mans money or his children
