I guess living where I live, and being raised as I was, I always assume most fathers take their kids hunting. My daughter loves to go, and this is the first year she's gotten to try out my 30-30 rifle. She's a pretty good shot, 3 in a pie plate at 100 yards, and she's only shot it 10-12 times. She wants to try the 270, but it's a little much for her. I took her during our youth weekend before regular gun season opened, and while we didn't get anything, she had a ball. She's mad now because I'm stuck offshore and she's out of school all week. We also hunt with dogs. We are fortunate enough to have relatives with enough acreage to allow this. She'll kill one this year, or at least shoot at one. I believe I'll enjoy it more than killing one myself.

Am I right in my assumption that most fathers hunt with their kids?

I don't, I don't like pulling the trigger on a living, non threatening me thing. That said, my son loves it, and my best freind does as well, so they spend a substantial amount of time in the woods together.

Remington I believe makes a "reduced recoil" load for the 270 that is available at Wal-mart. I cannot remember the ballistics and specifics etc. but in our area of the country, as far out as Dean is going to shoot, it was fine.

Dean got his second deer ever, and first this year last weekend, and will probably be in the woods this weekend as well looking for that buck.

I have always felt fortunate that I have been lucky to have folks around that picked up where I leave off and it gives my kids some wide experiences that many do not have.

And Jim's daughters don't seem to have the passion for hunting he and Dean do. They go out occasioanally but not all that much.

I knew absolutely no one that hunted when I was growing up. No one in our family hunts either. I do enjoy fishing with my kids, though. Same type of experience as far as spending time outdoors together. We use a small rowboat on small ponds and lakes. :)

My son and daughter both love shooting guns, but not necessarily hunting. We have chased a few coyotes and hogs, and if we see them and have the guns with us, we'll shoot them. As for fishing, usually if we're around water, they prefer to swim rather than fish. The times they are a changing. I used to shoot anything I could find that would move, and fished a lot. Not so much anymore.

I tried it once, but they couldn't hold a point worth a darn...:D

Not yet, but I'm looking forward to the day when we can all hunt together.

My wife has just started hunting a few years ago, and every year, she's more and more into it. She's really wanting that first buck, but doesn't want to shoot any of the small ones that we see from time to time. She wants them to grow bigger and to hang out here so we can see them. If and when she gets her first buck, we might never deer hunt the land again.

The kids just love to put on their camoflage and go look for Hogs. Sometimes we see them, but mostly they just have fun in the woods!!!

I can still remember the time I was about 6 yrs old and shot a 410 for the first time. I was kneeling and it kicked me over backward. Said I did not want to shoot it again, but the next day I was begging to go back.
Fast forward many years. Started taking my son deer hunting with me when he was about 6. Now 36 and we still go together.
Now we also have another little one tagging along. His son/my grandson began going with us when he was 5. Now he is 8 and is something he looks forward to each year.
Hope can keep it going until I can be taking my great grandson whenever that happens.

Hunting is a great tradition to pass on, however my dad didn't and now I don't, my 11 year old son is itching to go.... we do go on coon and possum patrol in and around the barn with the 20 gauge.

Not to throw a damper on the topic, but last weekend in Wisconsin a grandfather shot and killed his 18 year old grandson while deer hunting. Grandson was cold, threw a brown blanket over himself, grandfather apparently thought anything that was brown and moved was fair game....

I don't hunt nearly as much now as I did when I was in my 20s and early 30s. My boys are 18 and 12. I've taken them both hunting and fishing since they were old enough to tote a BB gun or Mickey Mouse rod-n-reel. I hope to help my younger son get his first deer this season.

Good luck to all and be safe out there.
