I bought a couple five gallon pails of Deere synthetic motor oil two years ago and am getting ready to use them but I wonder if the additives have settled out in that time. I suppose I could roll them around a bit or maybe put in the truck for while to shake up. Anyone know about this?

Good question...I have wondered that also...

The most acurate answer to the general question is...Depends.

Depends on the type additive. Are you talking an after market additive like Lucas treatment products or additives used in the manufacturing process.

Depends on the lubricant. In heavy gear lubes using a colliodal suspension, yes it will settle out over a period of time but can be re-suspended with a thorough mixing.

Using an analogy like tea or kool-aid. If you add suger to hot tea it melts completely. If left to evaporate a sticky residue will be left. Put sugar in ice tea and not all of it melts. It will settle to the bottom. This is not an exact analogy put makes the point.

Manufacturing engine oils and greases is basically a cooking process. Very monitored temps at specific time frames places additives in a particular order.

If an after market product are the base stock the same? If not over an extended period of time, if not properly mixed then there is a possibility they could separate.

Too many variables exist to answer your question with a definitive answer.

I have notice a small deposit in the bottom of the bottle or can or old oil. It does not appear as a seperated layer to me? l

Yes the additives will settle into the bottom of the oil, just shake the bottle or jug good before using it. I do this with old or new containers.

Any good ideas how I shake a 5 gallon bucket?

Pop the lid off and use a paint stirring stick. (Put the lid back on before you pour)

Pour it in the engine, it will get thoroughly mixed in there!

Some of the modern oils of today do require mixing of the contents. Regarding mixing a five gallon container I simply pick it up, invert it, and shake it!! I started to buy Stanadyne Performance Formula in the 5 gallon containers starting back in the 90s and that is how I would mix it. Its less than 40 pounds! I used to buy engine oils in 55 gallon barrels back in the 50s until many years later I was taught at a seminar once how most oils and additives of today are engineered from many ingredients. One example is the total amount of an Anti-Foam Additive in a 1 quart can of Mobil Jet II Turbine Oil was basically a small drop of the Additive and you HAD to invert the can and shake it before use!
