searching for a tractor and have run into a few Kiotis here lately - specifically a DK55 (and the MF dealer now also just starting carrying them)...after reading a little and comparing a few numbers ---a couple of questions have popped up..

1. Compared to say a kubota M4900 the hp is about the same - yet there is quite a gap between the two as far as the displacement is concerned on the engines...same deal as on a JD5203 (even more difference)---what is the explanation behind this? the Kioti is of course turobo'd as is the JD (not sure about the kubota).------using the JD and Kub for comparison only----

2. Along that same thought process - I have been around tractors all my life (own a dodge diesel) and have started to hear about people letting their tractors? cool down before shutting them off??? huh...

I have heard of this recommendation before about the new ford diesels - but never about a tractor -

looking probably at a used 'un...

I've been told by numerous people that turbo'ed engines need to let the turbo (and its bearings) spin down, and the oil supply to the turbo bearings needs to continue to flow so that cool oil is present when the pump shuts down. I've always assumed this means about 60 seconds of idling.

That was recommended for my Dodge Diesel, as well as my 2.5L Turbo Dodge mini-van. It's been recommended to me for turbo tractors as well.

It sounds like it makes sense. The only true long term experience I have is with my turbo mini-van, which has 261,000 miles on the original engine, turbo, and clutch..... I guess the practice doesn't hurt :)

Your mileage may vary.

I bought a used DK55C, been very pleased. Comfortable and easy to service. The Kioti forum has a thread where I talk about it a little more. Can't speak about a Kubota or the JD.

It depends on the type of turbo. Some of the new turbos are sealed in oil and don't require the post running shut down. My Lotus has such a turbo that has the bearings sealed in an oil bath and therefore doesn't necessarily require a any cool down time or a turbo timer. On the other hand my friend's Supra has a turbo timer and it is set to run the car for about 3 minutes after he parks it. He gets out takes the keys out and goes in the house. The car will cut off on its own. That said, as I get close to my destination I don't run the car hard (i.e. not in boost) anyway so cool down time is typically not necessary.

I have a dk55c, and several other turbo type diesels. If you run the engine hard and then shut off , it is possible that the high temp of the turbo parts will cause the oil to coke on the bearings. This is less of a problem with synthetic oils however , remember that the turbo is processing raw exhaust gasses and are sometimes known to glow red in the dark of night during operation. I always let the engine idle a bit to allow the bearings to cool. I think the displacement difference is from the turbo and the rated rpms. I do love the fuel efficiency of my tractor, as it seems to sip fuel. I would support the kioti as a great value.

I bought a used dk55 with 360 hrs on it and 2 1/2 years of warranty left, for $16,500 with fel. It has been a great tractor as far as I'm concerned. Although it is my first tractor so I really have nothing to compare it too. But I really ran it hard on this 3 day weekend...moved a lot of dirt and trees.
