My 09 DK45s lost power to the front axle last weekend. I checked the electrical side and found it all good.

Last night i used the loader to take the front axle off the ground and spun the front tires. It looked good, one spins CW and the other CCW.

I them slid the drive shaft cover back to check for rotation of the drive shaft. It rotates with the wheels. Then i found the bad stuff.

While rotating the wheels i grabbed the drive shaft. I could stop the drive shaft from rotating with very light pressure. I is the pinon or something else in the front differential.

What do you think it is? and has anyone every done this kind of repair?

Thanks

There are two couplings on the ends of the propeller shaft, with any luck, one of them (or the spring pin) is broken or has moved. Otherwise, one of the splines has bit the dust. Hopefully, the pinion gear and splines are OK so you don't have to open the differential.

Discliamer: I have not done this repair and hope I never will. But this is my opinion based on the tech data (service manual and parts diagrams).

Does the parts diagram show a keyed gear on the shafts or are they all splined? I've seen many gears spin on shafts when the key splits in half.

Yesterday i slid the driveshaft cover back and then tapped out the coupling roll pin. This separated the front axle from the transfer case.

I spun the wheels and held the splines of the pinion gear. I could keep it from rotating with just a little pressure.

Does anyone know it i can pull the wheel hub assembly as a unit and then remove the front axle tube and diff gears?

Looking at the service manual it seems like i should be able too.

No grinding from the axle and it seems as if the pinion gear has just minimal contact with the 27 bevel gear.

Thanks for the responses so far.
