I've got about 18 hours on a DK45 that has always started quickly on the first try with minimal smoke. Today, it didn't start on the first try but did on the second. However, it started reallly rough and belched out quite a bit of whiteish smoke. No more smoking after it smoothed out and no more smoking as I've restarted it during the day? It almost acted like it was flooded but I don't know how that could have happened with the throttle at low as always. Any thoughts?
Thanks

If it was cold and you didn't cycle the glow plugs it will do that.

Turn key on and wait for the glow plug light to go out, if it start right away after that turn key off back on again and wait for the glow plug light again or use the key to manual hold glow plugs on for 15 - 20 seconds.

Mine did that even when I made sure the glow plugs were on. I don't know if it still does or if just got used to it. Anyhow, it was never really a problem, but it did make me nervous at first. It does make quite a rattle, but runs well once it's going.

I don't know if it helps to cycle the glow plugs are couple of times when it's really cold. I do know that once it's started, it's good to let it warm up a bit before operating it.

Just bought DK 50, 50 hours and even after using glow plugs twice, excessive white smoke in the barn @ 52 degrees. I asked my saleperson to start another tractor on the lot ref. smoke and come to my house and check out mine cold start smoke. I started my 777hr 7360ss Cub Cadet with little smoke then started the DK50 which puffed a large billow of white smoke and runs rough. Cub was smooth. Salesman all Kioti's smoke at start. Both tractors use same fuel. Glow plug light works, don't know if glow plugs are working but it is sure puffing clouds. Any ideas what to check. Fuel has a cetane rating of at least 40.

chubby,
Sure sounds to me like the glow plugs are not working.
Check to see if you are getting any power/electric to your glow plugs when you first turn on the key.

I purchased a new DK45SE three years ago and it always started immediately and cleanly. After putting a number of hours on it the starting became more difficult (even after waiting for the glow plugs to warm). When it did start it would would be smokey for a bit and then clear up. I called my dealer about it and he told me to check the glow plug connections on the firewall under the hood. He said to make sure they were pushed all the way in until they lock. He said sometimes they might not have completely locked in when assembled and eventually lossen up. I checked and two of them were out a little bit. I pushed them in until they locked and it solved the problem. Been great ever since.

Chubby,

Take a test light, go to your glow plugs and touch the top of one. Turn ignition key on watch for how long test light stays lit compared to dash switch. Both should be on for same amount of time. 8 to 14 seconds depending on ambient air temperature.

But before you do that check the firewall for GLOW Relay (big red wires going into it). Unplug and plug back in. Might have a bad connection.

To all - Don't forget you can use your key switch to increase time on glow plugs. Key switch positions - OFF - ACC - RUN - GLOW, 1st spring - START, 2nd spring. Let tractor cycle plugs, then YOU hold at position 4 for 5 to 7 seconds more and this will aid your starting. DO NOT HOLD LONGER OR GLOW PLUGS WILL BURN OUT.

Thank you for the responses. Glow plugs really where not a thought, bring new. I thought this was a direct injection motor and direct injections will not start without g/plugs. Been through that with my Cub's. This morning 48 in the barn and 22 outside. It started after sitting two days but WOW lots of smoke and was missing but did pickup all cylinders after 30 seconds. Used all day except for transporting. After 30 ride on trailer, it started

when I got home but lots smoke. Will check out g/plugs. Does anyone know what hydro oil the factory uses. So nice clean and clear I would like to continue using. No hydro whine at idle in high range. lol thanks

If it's stumbling as bad as you say it is then there is very likely something wrong with the glow plug circuit. Salesmen are just that- NOT mechanics in most cases, so don't worry about things like: 'All Kiotis smoke', NO they don't!
Check the firewall relay connection, use the test light to check the time on circuit and if still smoking like a chimney on start get the dealer to properly service it for you.
Did it ever not smoke on starting?

Always smoked on cold start. And it is not firing on all 4 cyl, really clouds the barn. Showed my saleman how little the 7360ss Cub (mitsb) smoked and he said "oh its just one of those new tier 3 engines for cleaner burn". I said "looks like they failed". On warm start 0 smoke and no glow plug light. Yesterday @ 28f was the first time it smoked after first start of the day. But that was after a 30 min trailer ride home. I will check the glow plugs, I just thought being new and direct injection that this would not start without g/plugs.

Get it serviced! I started mine the other day. -13 Celsius, wind chill of -22 Celsius: cycled glow plugs once and it fire up with a little puff of blue smoke. Been sitting for a week outside is cold temps.

Even today with sub zero temps it fire up with no smoke.

Later...

I did not have the heaters plugged in on my tractor for the past 1-1/2 weeks due to the unseasonably warm weather. It was 39f this morning and i went to start my DK45SE with 1 cycling of glow plugs. fired right up. no smoke that i noticed. Any mechanic that saying..those Kioti's always smoke is smoking something himself.

Im thinking glow plug issues on yours also

Definitely check the glow plugs, if there is no problem have dealer check the timing. Last winter I had 3 new CT450s with similar problem, lots of grey smoke at start up, and a 3 were timed to the 40/45 specs. The 50 has different timing spec but someone at Daedong shimmed the pump for a 45. We reshimmed them and all started and ran like completely different machines. Not having another identical tractor to run side by side the owner didn't notice a problem until it got cold enough to show up during starting.

I did check firewall relay and it is pluged in properly. I didn't check glow plugs yet. New tractor should not need glow plugs, but then this tractor has has so many problems from the start. 48f in barn this afternoon started after checking relay connectors 20 seconds before all four cyl. fire, lots of smoke. That timing could be the ticket, this tractor was a New Holland dealers first shipment of Kioti's.

I didn't check glow plugs yet. New tractor should not need glow plugs,
Yes they do need glow plugs in cooler weather, new or not makes no differance
The Daedong diesel engine is indirect injection and mine has always needed the glow plugs to start smoothly without smoking.
The Kubota diesel engines we have at work are also indirect injection, and they will do the same thing in cooler weather since new. Cycle the glow plugs and they will start right up, smooth, no smoke.
Don't cycle the glow plugs in cooler weather and they will smoke and run rough for several seconds.

Yeah, What Vince said, and a BUNCH of the rest of us! My DK-40 will stumble in a heated to minimum 52degree F garage if I don't run the glow plug timer on first start each day. I know because it scared the c*a* out of me first time it happened....
Fix the glow plug circuit. Check timing too, if the glow plugs fail to remedy it.
Next case!:)

/ DK45 starting question #20
I'm NO expert on the subject of tractors starting in varied temperatures but I did read that the guy who had an injector and timing issues dealt with,( in the thread you linked to) said his dealer told him the injectors were back ordered and they got one from another dealer. That tells me that possibly since they were back ordered there may be a changed part number and a different supplier in the works OR it's just coincidence.
Then he said his now runs as well as yours AFTER having the work done to it?!:confused2:
If the way yours starts at any temp from 32 to 70 I wouldn't want to own it, especially for commercial use. Beware your warranty is limited if you use it for such purposes, so getting the issue resolved is even more paramount, IMHO.
The only time my DK-40se/HST Kioti starts like your Bobcat is if I just turn the key without giving it any glow. I'd contact selling dealer and see if there are any service bulletins from Bobcat on that series regarding hard starting even after using the glow plug circuit.
