Dk40SE HST front Axle grease zerk Question.

Hey List,

Does anyone know how much grease the zerk on the end of the Axles (see pics) of the DK40SE HST should take? I know I've greased these before .. but I've put in 15 pumps and I don't see any grease oozing from anywhere??

Anything with grease seals I only will do a max of 3 pumps with a standard 12 oz grease gun. I watch the seals closely and stop when they start to swell. I usually grease spring and fall. Do you have a seal leak? Do you have signs of grease on the axle in this area.l

I don't see any signs of any leaking. I replaced the front dif gear oil at the 50hr scheduled maintaince (have about 160hrs on machine now) and the peep hole shows full there.

Lets just say, hypothetically of coarse, someone shot 15 pumps into each side .. would that cause any harm? more is better right?

No, more is not better. More will break the seal sometimes or create a mess. 3 to 5 shots max per fitting. Use less MORE often.

Looking at your pictures and the grease fittings & upper seal you have no issues of being over greased as seals have not weeped any out. No worries.

From the attached links of parts diagrams, there are seals to keep water out which probably would also keep the grease in. Excess grease looks as though it would just go into the axle housing. Enough grease might eventually keep axle oil from reaching the bevel gears at the end or the grease would start to mix with the axle oil and maybe not flow to where it's needed. As mentioned, 3 pumps at scheduled maintenance should be fine.

Thanks for your responses. I bet my extra pumps did go into the axle housing .. have to be ok, because I aint going in there to get it out! Thanks for the diagrams of that seal VictorW!

I've added "user less grease MORE often" to my vernacular as well, Thanks Murphy.

3 strokes every 50 hours sounds good to me.

See red text above... That is a sight glass with a white ball and it should be full to where the ball is floating in the red circle in the center of the sight glass, NOT to where the sight glass is full. There needs to be room for expansion so the pressure doesn't blow out the seals when the fluid expands on hot days.
And check your maintenance schedule for how often to grease the zerks on the tractor- I don't recall it being 50 hour intervals.
