I'd like to upgrade my fuel filter and add a water separator.
What's a good choice?

Racor makes some nice water separator filters. They come in various sizes, with micron ratings between 2 and 30u, and optional heaters.
I put one on my Kubota a couple of years ago.

Racor is pretty much the diesel fuel filter standard. I added one to my GM 6.5TD which was much larger and easier to change out than the built-in engine top filter on the 6.5TD.

I was in Saskatchewan at the time and a heater was required in the winter - even with winter diesel. If you go with a heater element in the unit be sure to use a high amp switch for the heater element as it will draw a fair bit of power and will get hot - best to get a metal power switch. The heater is not designed to heat-up the diesel for the engine, but to ensure cold temperature wax formation in the fuel does not clog up the filter element and restrict flow.

Also, find a location along the fuel line that will make the spin-on/off Racor filters easy to access for change out.
