DIY FIRE STARTER

I'm an old Boy Scout. I've never had a problem starting a fire. ;)

Birchbark. Starts easily with a match, but burns really hot, much better than paper or cardboard.

Im not a fan of burning oil or fuel inside my woodstove. A cleaner approach is white birch bark, pine cones, and cotton balls.
I do the egg carton with sawdust and candle wax. I have never tried pinecones; do you treat them with anything or just light them? I will have to try them sometime.

I set a cotton ball under the pine cone, with a piece of white birch bark around that. It really doesn't take much if the firewood is really dry. None of it is treated, just dry as possible.

I use two empty toilet paper tubes or two halves of a paper towel tube stuffed with newsprint, used printer paper, CLEAN toilet paper or paper towels. Stuff the tubes with the paper leaving an inch or two sticking out, put kindling and starter wood on top, light the paper sticking out and the fire will start every time. After about 10 minutes add firewood sticks as usual.
