, I have seen some used equipment as money pits to restore or get something to work half-way decent too.

You are right there.

Aaron,

Thanks for trying. The one ad was already pulled (sold). Guess others are looking for those lower end deals for the smaller homestead farmer.

Up in that area is a twin tedder for $350. It sat outside for 2-1/2 years and looks like it's all bent up and some rust. Long as the PTO directed shaft and rotaries are still working things would be better to fix. http://bgky.craigslist.org/grd/4328663696.html

What I have a hard time understanding is if equipment cost soooo much, why then do people treat the equipment like trash?

Maybe keep your eye's peeled driving by old established smaller farms, for a steel wheeled rake. Some do ted and rake. Easy to tell when you look at the drive gears, as they will have opposing gears @ the drive wheel. And the handle that engages it, will have notches to throw both ways to engage.

I still have one I keep for just in case. Pretty decent shape, and no worries of flat tires.

If you check CL, there is also the option of posting a "want to buy" ad. Just include what you're willing to give for a good working model. You may be surprised... Someone may know someone that has one they're willing to sell.

Prices will only go higher, as the season nears. And most people that have items like that know it will bring premium prices at that time, so wait until shortly before to post what they have for sale.

The machine shown in the O.P. is not a RAKE, it's a TEDDER. When raking, both rotors will be spinning in the same direction. When tedding, rotors will spin in opposite directions (like these are).

You can accomplish tedding with pretty much the same result if you have a mower conditioner with spinning crusher rolls. Recut the windrow with the windrowing vanes spread out. This will scatter the wet hay and disperse the moisture.

It sounds like this motor is idling. IMHO, this means the rotors are spinning much to fast for tedding when the tractor is in the field. The hay will be destroyed. Alfalfa will be stems without leaves.

I have a Kuhn GRS-25 which can be shifted from rake to tedder mode by means of a gear shift, a tow angle and a swather board setting.

No its got the swath boards in the middle for raking like a haybob.

haybobs and all those other combination rake/tedders suck. They are reasonable at one thing and suck at the other, or suck at one thing and are reasonable at the other. They never rake well and ted well too.

True haybobs are ok if you keep teeth and springs on them. But they are still narrow and slow. Most of the other ones aren't great.

I have a Fransgard Ti-4000p and have to say for a combo machine its fantastic as a rake. I've never tedded with it as I have a real tedder.

Found a 2GL tedder on Craig's List for $900. Nice looking too. It was gone in a day. err.

Rather than spend $2K on a tedder, the idea of making one still keeps popping into my head.

One web site actually sells the tedder replacement rotary heads for $248 each.
If I make a quick parts list ...
PTO drive shaft $130
Tires about $60
Tubing frame about $180.
V-belt about $55.
Screws and brackets about $40
Total around $965 give or take $20.

Another method would nearly cut that price in half.
Rotary heads from BMX rear bike axles with sprocket gears FREE
PTO drive shaft $130
Tires about $60
Tubing frame about $180.
Chain driven FREE
Screws and brackets about $40
Total around $430 give or take $20.

This way, the DIY homemade unit can swap from a tedder to a rake with the right parts to interchange.

Distance is a problem but I've got 2 deutz fahr proper tedders for sale, 4 basket, one is 13 ft the other 18 ft. I was asking 1500$ for the pair with a pallet of spare parts. Been for sale 2 years no takers.

Now that is one large tedder. I'm looking for a smallest size for my tractor due to the field and the narrowness, but long swipes to take.

Yes, yours is a good deal price wise.
