FM is inherintly (sp?) more immune to noise. I do get T8 Electronic ballasts swamping FM broadcast band. One of those old crappy multi band portable radios would probably work well.
Yeah it is an AM/FM/Ham band. Thought of switching also listening with AM.

You have a 2 M handheld that does AM?

Well, it isn't really a handheld. It is a portable CCRadio. Sorry for the stretch... I guess it is a two-handheld but I figured it would be good for walking around the house :D

So you bought a C Crane radio?

I did... for my shop AM band use but decided to get the FM/SW for fun. I couldn't find any of my old transistors. I guess I gave those to Goodwill long ago? :confused3:

How does it compare with listening on your 7300 and the C Crane on the AM broadcast band.

No comparison. The 7300 kicks the CCrane's butt. Very clean vs. lots of noise even with a small loop antenna connected to the CCrane.

So, might you think the CC is mostly marketing hype without merit?

My jury is still out. It is performing better than my old Bose Wave radio which has been a fine tuner.

Probably not a fair comparison putting a portable Consumer radio up against a real communications receiver. Not to mention the price. :)
