I'll be looking at buying a used Ditch Witch 1230 in the next couple days. It is setup for 4". How hard is it to convert it to dig 6"? Is it as simple as changing the entire chain or just the cutting edges?

All you have to do is add the spacers. You will find it easier to change the spacers than use the 1230. How deep are you planning on going? If you look around move up to a 1820 with steering on it. I found a spare one under 2k.

I'll be using it to drop 4" drains for now. When I build my house in the middle of my claim, I'll be using it to run about 200ft of gas and electric. This goes 36" deep max.

So if I just buy a few spacers, I use the same teeth? Do I change out every 3rd tooth or so?

I found a link here (.pdf) showing parts for this unit. Shows part: B 136-029 "Tooth Spacer 1 inch"

To long for me to download but I use these spacers on the 1820 which is the same chain. I also have just cut old teeth used them when I needed just a little wider trench or than 6inch. I would get 8 spacers for a 36 inch bar.

I have cut about 9-10 inches with the 1820 but it is really slow and you have to have someone remove the spoils or they will fall back in.

Have fun but look for a 1820 as its worth the extra money.
