What do people think a "fair" discount from list is in % for the L40 series. Don't want to beat the dealer up too much, since I want good service in the future, but want a reasonable deal.

I have often heard that 15% is "fair", whatever that means.

Depends on where you are...15% seems to be about the most I've seen. East and west coast pay close to list. Prices here in the midwest are usually much better than that. My L3240 was exactly 15% off list on the entire package with loader and backhoe.

Financed through Kubota. I got the impression that it wouldn't have mattered. Their pricing was very consistent.

In New England you can expect 7% to 10%, with 7% being more common.

whats list?

I always laugh when people look at list price. You do realize that we as dealers never calculate list price.... at least we don't.

I have not shopped for a couple years but when I was shopping, the tractor and the loader quite often were discounted to the MSRP of the tractor. Then options and attachments were 20-25% off their MSRP's. There may have been better deals but that would usually get the machine bought. I am refering to utility and smaller tractors.

An interesting comment. Are you saying the Wholegoods Price List has no relationship to the price? It is a point of reference for what a buyer winds up paying. I've watched several different dealers prepare quotes for machines I was interested in. They used the list to find pricing for various machine configurations. Certainly a dealer would be more interested in the relationship of the sell price to their invoice and not to the list price. After all, this is more representative of their gross profit margin. For some of us trying to compare the price quoted by a dealer or from dealer to dealer it is interesting to know how far their price is from the manufacturer's price list.

Sorry to hear you find this laughable. Maybe I just don't understand your position!
