disc harrow bearings

I am rebuilding an disc harrow and wondered if anyone could answer this question. The disc has a square 1 1/8" axle but the sealed bearings are round bore with a 6" piece of pipe through it. The square axle slides through the pipe and never engages the bearings. Was this suppost to be this way or was it an attempt to fix it earlier. I was wondering the answer because i need to replace the bearings and i wasnt sure if i should get the square bore bearing or go with the round bore that was on it. Thanks any help is appreciated.
