My wife just bought two outside light fixtures that she wants me to use to replace two old ones. They are motion activated, have a bright and dim mode, and a sensor to only illuminate when it is dark out. So as I understand it, depending on how you set it it, it will come on dim at dark, go to bright when motion is detected, and reset to dim after a period of time. It states on the package that you must use an incandescent bulb and not a CFL. I called the manufacturer and asked if a dimmable CFL or LED bulb is acceptable. The lady I talked to said that she thought a dimmable CFL would work but not an LED. She didn't seem too sure of her answer!

Does anyone have knowledge or experience in this regard that they could share?

find out the method of dimming.

i'd guess it's a generic triac circuit.

once you find that out.. find a bulb that is compatible with that dimmer technology. many older ballasts do NOT like it.
