This one was in the running along with the P90, but I'm used to Fuji and it just fit my hand better and the 30X zoom with triple image stabilization won me over.

Hi,

I'm after a digital camera. Doesn't have to be too special beyond a) a high resolution (12MP minimum) and b) reliable and likely to last a while. I'm looking into this - See lowest price for Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 14 Megapixel Digital Camera - Silver - do you guys think it'd be appropriate? Any suggestions of an alternative?

Picked up the $99 12 MP Kodak at Office Depot on Tuesday. Memory card was $25 and holds 3300 2 MB pictures(8GB card). Works nice and simple for bottom feeders.

I hope this question isn't too off thread but does a digital camera operate with a similar shutter device as a conventional film camera or does it just electronically capture the triggered moment through a fixed opening? I have a friend who just purchased a pricey digital SLR camera and I swear the shutter click sound it makes seems to be of an artifical recording and not a true mechanical shutter opening and closing sound.

Digital SLR's still have a mirror which has to flip up to allow light to reach the sensor just as a film SLR camera has. What you are hearing is the mirror moving. Point and shoots use a "recorded" sound to mimic the shutter.

OK, so to start: My budget? $300-400 max. I need higher MP count as I do a lot of cropping. I can't really afford to invest in an SLR right now.

If you like Olympus, don't see how you can beat this for price and free shipping.
