I have a Case 580B backhoe and today when I fired it up to plow the 18" of fresh snow the differential lock was, and still is, stuck. I have had some problems with the right brake sticking and it was sticking when i first pulled out. I usually just put the shuttle in reverse and the brake frees itself.
Today when it did this I seen a good bit of black brake dust in the snow and then noticed the diff lock was stuck. It also seems that the right brake is not working or barley working ( hard to tell in the snow. ) Looked under to see if the linkage was broke but it seems to be fine and operating as it should.

Needless to say steering is difficult now. Any ideas???.

BTW, why is it that things only break when you REALLY need to use them??

Pull the brake housing of the right side all there is for a diff lock is a sliding gear that locks the two shafts together four bolts and a couple of pins hold the whole thing on plus the brake line you will have to bleed the brake when you put it back on though.

Thanks dirthog,

One question though, are you sure I would have to bleed the brakes? they are drum brakes and just use a simple linkage to work. ( although I don't know a whloe lot about this piece of equipment so I could be wrong)

I had to take the diff lock off my 580 C and did not have to bleed the brakes. It is simply a bolt on housing the holds the locking gear and spring mechanism.

The spring mechanism that makes the gear pop out when you let off the throttle is probably what is causing the unit to stick.

Everything on my tractor breaks when it is really cold out or when its raining. I need to get my barn built ASAP.

I always had a problem with the diff lock sticking on the 580B's I used to run. It was so annoying, very embarrassing trying to load a customer up, and you'd have to drive back and forth to get the lock to unstick (at least that's what worked for me).

Quite alright. My backhope is a 1979 580B CK just to clairfy things. I probably should have put the full discription in my original post.

1979? I thought C's were made then and the B's back in the 60's?
