Difference in Carhartt vs Wrangler

FWIW, been very happy with my C.E. Schmidt long-sleeve denim shirts from Tractor Supply for around $20 or so ...

Yes, the Schmidt stuff is halfway decent. A few years ago around Christmas, TSC had their "Blue Mountain" shirts, jeans, and cargo pants on sale as low as $7. They are not as heavy as the Schmidt stuff but at that price I stocked up and have been happy with them.

I did go ahead and buy the Wrangler 'canvas' shirt. Not as thick material and not as heavy as expected, but is comfortable to wear nonetheless. Certainly worth more than the 1/5th price difference of Carhartt. It'll be perfect for tree work - which will warm just about anybody up :)

Thanks for the link. I may try a pair of those. Is the crease permanent like Dickies? I never have to iron the 874s.

Yes, the crease is permanent.

Reviving an old but good thread because I once again find my self looking to buy pants, but Duluth trading dropped what I need.
<snip>For me, the Carhartt pants far outlast both Wrangler and Levis 505. The best work pants I have seen are "Firehose" from Duluth trading, and that was several years ago. I don't have any recent experience with their work pants, but their shirts are still good.

<snip> I have moved to Duluth brand. They are normally above my comfort zone price wise, but you can find them on sale for close to half price a couple of times a year. Duluth quality seems even a step better than Carhartt judging from the things I’ve bought so far.

I am so hard on work coats, I only buy from resale shops or deeply discounted sales, either way, they don’t live long.

<snip>

I've got two prime rules for pants. Durability and cargo pockets. I used to wear Poppers and BDU's, but they tend to wear out. My first Duluths were the Fire Hose Cargo Work Pants and then the Fire Hose Briar Pants back in 2015, because I tend to get into the briars. The briar pants don't have cargo pockets but the extra protection is worth it. And about all I've been wearing for long pants are the Duluths since 2015.

I've since bought several of their other variations (only when they went on special of course) of their cargo pants and only the "dry on the fly" were not suitable for going through the briars, brambles and brushes where a rabbit couldn't go. The briar pants are my go to's for when I'm cutting trees down in Mississippi. The last thing I want to worry about is getting trapped in thorns.
Well Mississippi summers can get hot and humid and I've found there are lots of jobs around the house that shorts are suited for. I had 1 good pair of Duluth shorts but they got washed on hot by my wife and shrunk.

And now Duluth only makes them in a max of 11" inseam and I kneed longer :)

Since all the Duluth pants I've bought since 2015 have stood up to my wear through briars, brambles, and barbed wire I'd like to find Duluth Fire Hose quality in a pair of 15" inseam shorts.

When I used to wear Poppers and Army BDU pants I'd usually end up snagging them in briars and tearing them below the knees, then convert to shorts. Can't do that with the Firehose. And I hate to tear up a perfectly good pair to convert to shorts.

So can anyone recommend heavy duty shorts with 15" inseam? I tried a pair of Dickies but they are like paper compared to my Duluths.

I don't wear jeans but rather cotton poplin type pants. Dickeys double knee pants have been excellent for me and wear forever. $30 or so and they are really tough. Carhartts are fine and very tough but Dickies work better for me.

Coats and vests come from Carhartt and I've been tempted on Wrangler shirts but not yet.

I wear Carhartts mostly because they more align with my politics.

Besides that though both companies make some of their line in the USA so pay attention to the tags and try to grab the USA lines. For Carhartt I know it's their double front pants (that I wear) and their loose fit jacket. Not sure which one's Wranger still makes here.
