Diesel can has black algae.....

One of my plastic diesel cans has black algae growing in it. Is the fuel from this can OK to put in my tractor? How do I clean the can and get rid of this stuff? I fill my tractors fuel tank by pouring through a Mr. Funnel and this seemed to trap the algae from the can, however now it is all over the funnel screen. How do I clean the Mr. Funnel?

I don't have a mister funnel, but if you can't swirl and swish the algae out of the can with some clean fuel, you might want to get a new one for the cost of a plastic can its not that big of a deal. As for the tractor, I would put some conditioner in it, some thing that will kill the bacteria. We use Total Power at work, I know alot of people here use Power Service which I saw available at Walmart just the other evening. I don't know if the Power Service kills the bacteria, others may help me out here or it should say on the bottle

There are addatives specifically that treat for algea in diesel tanks.

Yea, but I didn't notice the algae until I had emptied the can into my fuel tank. Would Mr. Funnel keep the algae from getting in the fuel tank? Where can I buy algicide for diesel.

I stopped at Wal-Mart on the way home to buy dog food, and looked at diesel fuel treatment products. Nothing mentioned algae. Ended up buying a new diesel can, 70 lbs. of dog food, 2 cycle oil and big jug of Orange/Pumice hand cleaner. It seems my hands are always getting greasy/oily now that I have a tractor!!. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

When I got home the wife suggested I wash the can out with bleach. Would this get rid of the algae or should I just pitch the infected can?

I just watched a TV show........OH Myth Busters, some one gave them a car to blow up, the pulled the motor and set it up to run on a stand and then added all kinds of products to the gas in trying to blow the motor. One of the products was house hold bleach and it definately had adverse effects on the motor. Not to mention it rusted the steel gas tank over night. I'm guessing that you probably have a plastic tank, but I wouldn't recomend it based on what I saw... Mixing chemicals like diesel fuel and bleach, there's no telling what may happen. I know from Chem class in college two simple chemicals like brake fluid and the chlorine pool chemicals for a home pool will combust upon contact. Pretty impressive, but then gets you thinking where did I put that can of brake fluid last night?. I think that TSC would sell an algicide for diesel. If not maybe where you purchase your diesel from or even your dealer, or another dealer maybe one that handles heavy construction equipment. I would think that at least one of these would be able to give you a lead on where to get your hands on some.

I'm sure I've seen algicides at TSC.. but you should also be able to get them at 'truck' stops.

I'd treat the tractor tank before growth occours, and then treat both your new cans.. and whatever holding tank you may have.

Myth Busters is a pretty neat show. Saw one the other night about ships sucking you down, and blowing up a trombone. They definately have fun on that show. I think I'll avoid the bleach and just pitch the can.
