My Case dozer has what Case calls the 6-830 engine in it. They say it's a Case engine and not a Cummins. The mechanic and New Holland laughed and said Case is just calling the Cummins 8.3 engine their own name, but it's really a Cummins engine. I honestly don't know for sure, but the Turbo is a Holset X35, which is Cummins.

My problem started with oil coming out the end of my turbo at the fitting for the muffler. From what I know, this means the turbo was bad and needed rebuilding. I took it to the shop and they took it apart in front of me and showed me the worn out shaft and broken fins on the blades. No doubt it was bad. $500 and it has a new cartridge and ready to go.

I put it in and everything was good for a few hours, than it happened again. I checked the drain line and replaced the air filters with new ones. I also pulled the breather line off the top of the valve cover. Everything is clear.

I took the turbo back and they replaced all the seals and double checked tolorances. Everything is perfect in there.

I put it back on and solved nothing.

Oil is still coming out of the turbo at the muffler.

I did check the exhaust intake port into the turbo and it was dry and sooty. No oil there. There was some oil on the tube that goes from the turbo to the intake manifold.

I think this is where my problem is.

I pulled the breather line off the top of the valve cover and ran it with it off. I have a huge oil mess from oil splashing out the hole. The oil from the turbo stoped when I did this too.

My next step is to take off the valve cover to see if the drain lines through the head are plugged. I'm at my limit here in what I know and really need some advice on what is causing this.

I keep hearing about blow by and venting, but don't know what else to do.

Please help!!

Thanks,
Eddie

Hate to say this but do a commpression check and then get ready to pull the head.

Is it possible for you to run the valve cover vent to a seprate container, like a coffee can and plug the hole on the intake?I'm far from a diesel tech but I wonder if the extra blow by is from worn valve guides as the engine get older.

If your turbo has an oil return to the block and I am sure that it does, there is good chance that the line is plugged or collapsed. If it is it will have back pressure and no where for the oil to go except through the seals.

Jerry,

That was what I was hoping it was. No place for the oil to go, but it's clear. The problem also stoped in the turbo when I removed the breather line on the valve cover.

This has me confused since this line was wide open and shouldn't be allowing the same amount of preasure through it when it's on as oposed to being removed.

There is no restrition in that line, it's just a plastic 90 with hose and pipe that goes done the back of the engine and is open to the ground below. No check valve or anything else.

Any other ideas?? Anybody???

Eddie,
Look for a crank vent valve or a crank vent filter. Whichever one of those it has could also be plugged.

Jerry,

I can't find anything that looks like a crank filter or vent.

The oil drain still seemed like it had to be the problem, so I took it off and ran the engine. Oil flowed out of it freely. Then I shoved some 12/2 romex into the line that goes into the block. After a foot or so it stoped, which is quite a ways into the block. That's definately clear.

There is some oil coming out of the vent in the valve cover, so I'm going to replace that and the seal. I doubt it has anything to do with it, but is a result of my taking it on and off too much.

I also took of the valve cover gasket hoping to find a pluged up drain line. Nope. No drain holes for just oil, but the opening for the push rods is pretty large and free of any obstruction. Oil shouldn't have any problem draining through there. In fact, teh rocker arms and everything in there looks amazingly clean. No build up of any kind.

The picture is of the turbo air discharge tube. This is where the air comes from the turbo to the intake manifold.

How could oil get into the intake manifold and travel agains the flow of air into the turbo??

It would have to go straight up, make a ninety degree turn and then pass through the tubines to get to the exhaust to where it's leaking out the tail fitting from the turbo to the muffler.

This makes no sense to me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anybody, PLEASE HELP.
Eddie

Are the bearings bad in your turbo? If the seals where bad they would leak oil around the turbine shaft.
