If the transport hauler had only reviewed the bridge height clearances on his route, this mishap would have been prevented.

Pretty big leap to assume that info is 100% correct.
Seen evidence of more than one incident like that in NY after paving work.

That'll buff right out!
I guess the Dodge saying "Ram It" didn't work so well.
Those car carriers are notorious for low bridging. With the hydraulics on those trailers they could probaby have a vehicle at 16-18'.

The transport drivers are supposed to measure the highest point of their load every time they load. The signs posted for bridge clearance are not always accurate.

Back in the late '90's and early '00's I was fielding the Digital Topographic Support System, Heavy

Digital Topographic Support System (DTSS)

6 of these were built and fielded worldwide. Three of them hit bridges while being trucked by contract trucking in the U.S. It would ram the a/c units back into the structure and peel off about 6' of the top.

The really bad part is that one of our software packages/applications was designed to analyze a road database and alert to low bridges. Of course the truckers never did route planning.

i'm surprised with todays te hnology that those rigs don't have active real time onboard measurement for clearances on overpaases, bridges, roof canopys, toll booths, etc. it would seem that with laser or ultrasonocs this would not be that difficult to do, and given the consequences would be cost efective even of it cost $1000/vehicle to implement.

I saw a forward facing pickup on the back of a car carrier loose the roof and the tailgate area years ago. Portland, PA where RT 611 north crosses over the river to Columbia, NJ. This bridge crossed over 611 kind of at the base of a hill then leveled out. The bridge clearence was fine but not for something the length of a car carrier.

Anyone who has ever driven a truck in New York state will tell you that the bridges are not always what they are marked. Or, at least they did not used to be. One day I was hauling a load of toothpicks (fence posts) and even though I had measured the heighth, I got chased off 90 at Syracuse when I triggered the overhead. I think a piece of metal banding may have touched it. So, I had to go west on that road that parallels 90, I think it's 5 or 20?

So, I am going around a bend and find myself staring at a bridge marked 12'6". Still moving at about 35mph, I cleared the bridge just fine as I was gritting my teeth for the crunch that never came.

Well, the positive is it was tied down properly.:ashamed:

In my home town there is a Rail Road Bridge going over IN1. Its clearance is about 11' and there is a truck route but at least once a month there is a semi that tries to go though. Each and every weekend they have a camper or large boat get scalped. Uhauls also fall victim.

About 10 years ago they put in a height measuring device that is nothing more than some larger Garage Door Style Safety Sensors that set off a flashing light to warn the drivers but 9 times out of 10 they still hit it.:confused2:
