The rain has stopped for now, but more on the way. We have showers predicted for the next 3 days. Over all, since monday, we got almost 9". Last night the temps started falling. Mid 40's at night, mid 60's during the day. Steady winds, 20 to 25 mph. First frost a possibility by monday morning.

At least we got to see a little green before winter sets in.

With the wind that started blowing last night, we're seeing a BUNCH of tree limbs breaking and falling. 5 months of dry weather took its tole on them. Now they start to show the damage.

The southern end of Northern VA has been getting rain since Tuesday night. All day yesterday, and its forecasted to keep raining through Saturday. It's been over 6 weeks since we sniffed rain. The grass, clover, and deer food I planted in early Sept hasn't even started coming up yet. Hopefully, the birds didn't get all of the seed!

I disked and broadcasted rye grass a few weeks ago for the animals this winter. It sat there with no moisture until it rained last Thur. an Fri. We got 3.5" of slow drizzle. The rye grass is coming up now and it's a good stand.

We need more. It's been drizzling here again yesterday and this morning, hope to get more later.

Am hoping to get my ryegrass out this week.......discing is complete and have the seed in my truck.......using Gulf variety and will see hwo well it does....hopefully will get some more rain the in the next few weeks.......and the temps are finally down to the high 70's during the daytime!

It's been raining for two days here to finally break our record number of days with no rain. Our county was gonna run out of drinking water in a month. Keep it coming.

You all in KY sure did good! Wow...9" is great and really gets you well toward normal. It also helps that it was a soaking rain vs gully washer.

The 120 day precip outlook has you all in the above normal rainfall area. That should help a lot.

Maybe interesting to some of you here: UK Agricultural Weather Center This gives loads of weather infos. I find it very helpful and the price is certainly right. :)

Now our year-to-date totals look fairly normal, but we aren't out of the woods just yet. With 9" (+ or-) the totals add up to normal but a great deal of this latest rainfall did run off. I went out on a job site today to look over some core samples where we are about to start a 6 story parking garage. By the time we augered past the 4' mark, there was no noticable soil moisture yet. Last week there was NONE. Now we at least have some moisture in the upper reaches of the soil structure. It's going to take time and more steady rains to bring the water table back to normal, as well as replentish all the creeks, lakes and ponds.

At least we are on our way back to normal though.

As a side note, several months without significant rain causes everyone to totally forget how to drive in the rain. It was utter kaos here this past week. We have 3 people in our office out due to accidents. The effects of a prolonged drought go far beyond brown lawns.

The bags of seed I used stated it was from Oregon. I used it last year, it worked like a champ and actually didn't completely die off until this past late April or early May. Let me know how the Gulf variety works for you. Germination rate with the Oregon seems to be strong, even though it "baked" for about 2.5 weeks or so on the dust, I mean, dirt! Birds had a field day on it, pun intended, before it sprouted.

Keep me posted,

As of last week we were listed as being 14" below normal for the year. We've had one month that was 1" above normal, one normal and all others deficit.

Last Friday morning we got 1/2" (just at my house, less around town). This current system has been deviously avoiding north central SC (it is amazing to watch the radar as the system splits and goes around us, dropping large amounts on all 4 sides of us). We've gotten about 0.4" but they're promising more. We are certainly glad for what we're getting but we're not getting as much as we need yet.

My property which is about 30 miles south has gotten even less than here in Rock Hill.

But, for the first time since late July the ground looks damp.
