A long time ago my wife and I were driving down a country road about to go over an overpass over I80/90 and a few horses came charging out of a yard and turned up the road towards the overpass as well. A lady was running after them.

So I stopped and told her to hop in the car. We passed the horses and cut them off at the pass.... well, the overpass, but I always wanted to say "Cut 'em off at the pass!"

She hopped out in front of them and told them to stop. They did.

Then they got this look in their eyes like they were busted. :ROFLMAO:

She thanked us, put a lead on one of them, and walked them back to the house they came from. Apparently, they pushed their way through a gate that wasn't secured.

Anyhow, it was fun to help out. (y)

When I was very young my dad got the idea he could keep the pigs in their field by using electric fence. Their large five acre pen was between the road and my mom's garden. She worked in that garden from sunup to about 10:00 then from 3-4:00 until dark every day. The pigs had rooted out a spot so they could get under the fence and dine. When they would decide to get out and into the garden they would start milling around and squealing before they even got to the fence. Mom would listen for them and when she heard the commotion would grab a tobacco stick and take off running. The pigs were squealing because they knew they were going to be shocked. A large sow does not like being hit in the face with a club and will fight you. So after one of the times we had to chase them back in there was one of the few loud arguments I ever heard from my parents. We spent the entire weekend wiring the bottom to the woven wire fence into quickcrete and filling up the holes so the pigs couldn't get out. I had forgotten about that until reading some of the posts here.

That’s funny. I raised pigs behind electric for a couple of years. Once they experienced it they wouldn’t even go near it; rather, they’d push a mound of dirt up in front of the entire length. One time I was gone for a couple of days, returning to discover that the fence wasn’t working. They had pushed so much dirt against it the fence was grounding out, yet they still wouldn’t approach it.

Barbed wire fences are not impervious. The grass is always greener on the other side. Occasionally either of my two neighbors - big ranchers - cows will push thru and be on the other side. I've never had them on my land and neither neighbor seems to mind the "crossover" too much.

Eventually everything get straightened out.

HA - four of five days ago - a "band" of four cows show up at my inner gate. They were identified and the rancher to the south reunited this lost band. They had been out on the open range since they were turned out - spring of 2022. Surprisingly - they were in good shape.

First time this has happened in the 40+ years I've been out here.

My dad had animals for 20+ years and he never had problem until the day he cancels his insurance, on that day the cows got out and went in the middle of the high way.... Luckly my uncle was traveling through at that time stop the traffic and brought them back in the field without incident...

My father raised ducks and geese for a few years. They went out into the road several times, and on one occasion held up the school bus for a few minutes. :D
