1979 1600 ford
I went to an auction Friday to bid on a 3110D , the tractor was dropped off a flat bed trailer at one time and suffered sheet metal damage to both fender's and the hood was badly damaged. Other things damaged was the radiator although it wasn't leaking when I looked at it the core was twisted to the right alittle , right rear wheel was bent but I think it could have been straightened but I had some concern about the axle, same with the lower arm's on the 3ph, muffler was broken off with some damage to the manifold might have been able to save it, and the steering wheel took a light hit . I dropped out of the bidding at $ 2650.00 figureing that was to much for the amount of damage so it went for $ 2600.00. It ran and all but something that took a hit like that it's hard telling what else could be wrong. If it was running when it fell and it wasn't shut off in time could have messed up the motor due to lack of oil . Mark

Yep you screwed up. The scrap iron is worth more tan that.

IMHO, You did the right thing by walking away.

You could have made a short career out of chasing parts, discovering internal damage, and the fear of the unknown like main and rod bearing starvation from lack of lubrication.

I WOULD have been very interested and maybe even bought it, had I another duplicate model at home :).

Had I not just purchased a Ford 1600 on E-Bay which was a waste, hard and expensive to buy part's for. I might have went alittle higher on my bid but it's hard telling how much higher the bid might have went if I would stayed in and I didn't need another money pit. Mark

If it was just cosmetic problems & you didn't care what it looked like, it may have been worth going higher. Otherwise it was high enough.

You got out in time, that is where I would have stopped, a cracked rear case would have cost a fortune.
By the way you should go reiterate how hard it was to find parts for your Ford. People never believe me when I tell them.

Well it's like I posted before had I not just bought the little Ford and I priced a piston set at the local Ford dealer at around $350.00 and gasket set at $280.00 I would have went alittle higher. As much as I would like to have a nice shiney 4x4 tractor that's not the reason I stopped bidding I just didn't need another piece of equipment taking up space costing a small or large fortune to fix. The person that won the auction might have taken the 3110 home changed the fluid's and it might run like a top, all though I would not like to think he had it that easy ( just kidding ), but not wishing any bad luck on the guy, but it would remind me you should have bought it. I would say the majority of our parts inquires are people who bought tractors at auctions. I would also say without a doubt they are the first ones to freak out when they get a price. In the end they pay at least the same or more than if they had just bought it from a reputable dealer in the first place.

Buck, we know this tends to be true, and I've always wondered why it is that people so easily believe someone would put a perfectly good tractor in an absolute auction. Maybe in some rare bankruptcy or estate auctions, but most units we have ever seen at auction were there because they wouldn't sell on a lot for one reason or another. There just is no free lunch. The only thing free in all of Creation is known to you and me (and many others), but can't be discussed here due to forum rules.;)
