On side discharge decks the popular 2x4 wood block works pretty well on the blade next to the discharge chute to keep the blade from turning while the nut is removed. But on other blades under that same deck that block of wood isn't all that convenient in my opinion.

So today I tried what I dreamed or read and it seems to work well. A length of 4" pvc pipe was put through the discharge chute and the second blade (left side blade) was inserted inside the pipe. 3" would have worked but I didn't have that size handy. I don't raise my mowers to do this. I lay on my fat belly and with only one nut to remove can have it done before I could find a jack or lifting device.

Good idea. I'll try that.

 had to re-read this part, to get rid of a bad mental image.
