Diagnosing Temp Gauge Fault

I'll match your not relevant with my own. I understand that modern cars have their gauges programmed to sit in the middle of the range and only shoot up when they is a problem. Stops the dealers being hassled with "my cars running a bit warmer than my mates" etc.
Sounds like we heard the same story told slightly different ways.

That must save them $$$$ overall.

Just to close this one off...

I bought a generic temp sender with M16 x 1.5 thread from EBay in the UK. It was £9 (roughly $15?). It wasn't listed for any particular vehicle.

It didn't come with a new washer, was a little shorter, and the hex part was much smaller than the old one such that I couldn't reuse the washer. This made me a bit nervous it was going to leak, so I wrapped PTFE tape round the thread before installation. I now have a working temp gauge.

Old one on the right for comparison

I did the same thing today on my yanmar 2210. I ordered a 72 nissan 610 temp sender and like yours it was a little smaller than the original one, but it worked like a charm!

I would have used the Nissan one too if it were available here. Glad it worked out.
