diag. a constant smoke grey/light problem

I'm wondering any way of checking what the cause of light grey smoke under low/moderate load on my little diesel would be i think it's kinda normal fuel smoke or something but is there any key red flags to identify a possible injector problem or ignition timing something? No oil useage about 500 hrs on the unit.
