Right in the middle of a heat wave (112 degree heat index) my 1430 decided to leave me stranded in the middle of a field. After getting Terry on the phone, he determined that the fuel shut off solenoid was bad. Have any of you guys replaced this before? If so, how hard of a job is it? Also any tips along the way would be helpful. Terry did warn me not to get belt to tight, as some people had alt problems with a tight belt.

Part wise-I found this place to be very helpful. They made sure I got the right pigtail for my model (sent a part picture and looked at my cell phone picture to confirm)and I received the part the next day after my order. Cost was $157.24 with ground shipping.

New Part#M4287116 Old Part #D4272956
Make sure to give them your model and Serial number for part lookup.

The replacement is straight forward. Only mild difficulty is getting at the bolts that hold it in place.

I thought mine had failed, worked through with Terry who confirmed it had failed. I purchased the replacement from a Duetz distributor for $250+. When I installed it it didn't solve the problem.

The problem turned out to be a bad ground. The solenoid has a separate ground wire that grounds through the rear connection box (at least on my 1845) and when I started looking I found the connection box fasteners had failed and broken the ground path.

I now have a spare solenoid.

I replaced the solenoid on my 2445 a couple of years ago. If I recall correctly the "tell" was lack of audible clicking when the key is turned. Similar symptoms can occur with loose ground, but in my case it was the cure. I got a standard replacement selenoid for an old ford (don't remember year) that worked fine. I don't recall it costing enough to make a man think about throwing his hat in a creek. Actual replacement was easy enough. Best to keep real good track of where the wires go in case you get distracted...

Dear Wasabi,

Isn't the fuel solenoid on the engine block, and a Deutz specific part? Are you thinking of the starter solenoid, which is a Ford starter solenoid?

All the best,

Peter

Ponytug is correct it's the fuel shut off on the block behind the pulley. I'm 95% sure it's bad due to melted and burnt area's of it. Thanks for tip on the ground, I'll check that also. Picture of new one attached.

oops...right you are Peter. I should have read the post more carefully. Thx

I am very intrigued in this fuel pump burnout issue. While knock on wood mine has been good, I keep hearing of peoples burning out.

Design flaw? Just a bad part? or me just hearing one person having a failure over and over to make me think it is many?

Dear Carl,

Another great question. In and out (linear) solenoids are prone to failure after 1000-10,000 cycles depending on the use and the solenoid. Rotary solenoids are good for 10-100X that. My recollection is that the Deutz is a linear solenoid. On the other hand, a linear solenoid is more likely to clear debris and can shut more tightly.

Bad design? Perhaps by choosing a linear solenoid over a rotary one, you could argue that is sub-optimal design, but is also a common one. I'd argue that the rest of the engine is so bulletproof, that this is commonly the weakest link, despite being very reliable in itself.

Lots of agricultural diesel engines get started once a day and run for 12-14 hours. 1000 cycles would take you out three years, and into rebuild territory for those engines.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?

Does that help?

All the best,

Peter

Carl,

The hour or so that I spent on the net looking into this solenoid it did seem to have a high failure rate. But as Peter pointed out they can have failure with only 1000 cycles, mine at best has between 500-800 cycles(I only use it two weekends a month) with failure in four years. That being said, this is the first repair in four years on my Deutz engine.

I plan on installing the new solenoid over this long weekend.

Terry
