I just came across an article in the Insider Secrets to Hydraulics. They state for several reasons why one should not use detergent oil in hydraulic systems. and I believe that all multi weight oils are detergent. The guy who wrote this is supposed to be an expert. So why are we using 10w-40 in our systems. Because PT said so. It is getting difficult to believe any one now days.

PT is not the only manufacturer using motor oil in hydraulic systems. I have a John Deere Skid Steer that uses motor oil.
