Depreciation Curve for Used Tractors

Depreciation curve? Or appreciation curve?

I bought my old John Deere 2020 (early 60s model) in 1997 at a farm auction for $7000. TractorData has that model selling for $5800 new. Old Ford 8Ns and 9Ns are selling for around $4000 around here!

You MUST take the value of the money into account. We spent $2500 or so on a new Universal Tractor in 72 and got three times that for trade in in 98. But then trade in prices can be all smoke and mirrors too.

The only depreciation curve that counts for anything is what the government allows you to write off against your income taxes. Unless you are a used equipment trader, everything else is a paper exercise and a simple waste of effort. For the average homeowner depreciation is what you PAID for the tractor less the SELLING cost.

I have a 1974 model year JD 2030 purchased at 20 years old in 1994. I am guessing I paid more than the original owner. Now 26 years later I would NOT sell it for what I paid for it.

I like it. That's the perfect tractor for 98% of the people. IMO. That back wheel just screams tractive ability. Hey, that's what a "tractor" is supposed to have, isn't it?

Just don't try and sell a very little usd tractor and expect people to jump on it for near new price. A few factors are at play that make that difficult.

I am not even remotely interested in selling, but I do believe that my 2006 L48 TLB with 250 orig. owner hours, may actually be worth a little more than the $32K I paid for it exactly one year ago.
A new, L47 TLB similarly equipped, is $64K+. The L47 TLB will not dig as deep, and is Tier IV.

^ I'd wager so, fried.

I snagged my used, 2001 Cub Cadet 7305 for just $10k 7 years ago. (Same tractor as a mahindra 3015, made by Mitsubishi). I've taken it from ~180 to ~700 hours but am quite sure I could still sell it for $10k (especially with some attachments thrown in).

Any new-ish tractor, subtract a couple grand right away for putting on the first scratches and using up some of the warranty. But the depreciation is slow as molasses after that for anything well kept.
