I'm looking at tractors that are in the 30hp range that can help me keep my place cleaned up. Is this enough hp? We have a place that has a creek on it that gets a lot of gravel and the main job will be to clean the creek up every year or whenever I can get to it. There's probably 12 inches of gravel in places and maybe more where it builds up. I want a geared tractor and no hydros. Manhindra says their tractors are built heavier than kabota. Is this true? I have looked at kiota, and montana but they don't seem to be built very heavy. The tractor needs a heavy bucket and 4 WD to handel the job. The creek seems to be pretty solid but there are soft places also so I don' trust just a 2 WD. I would like to hear from those of you who have cleaned creeks and know what to look for. Everyone that has a tractor please let know what you think of it and any advice on creek cleaning you might have. I hope sell our place so I don't have to buy a tractor but real estate seems slow right now. I don't want to buy the wrong hp or tractor. My driveway is also 300 feet long and I need a tractor I can depend on.

I use a 30 hp Kubota L3710 to clear creek crossings. After each high water event the bank cuts are filled with enough silt to make it tough for a 4x4. Often the silt is higher than the axles. Small and maneuverable works for me. If you're going to be moving a lot of rock, you'll probably need a heavier tractor and more hp.

Can't really help you with the creek clearing capabilities of the different tractors, but I just bought a Kubota L3400. I researched and shopped John Deere, Kubota, Mahindra and Kioti. And I truly believe you will be happy with any choice you make. But my opinion, and choice was going with the Kubota. I really liked the Mahindra and wanted to buy it, but it just seemed to me the overall quality was a little bit more robust with the Kubota. the sheet metal was a little bit thicker, there was less plastic, the wheels seemed to be built a little sturdier. I know the specification numbers seemed to favor the Mahindra, but after 10 years of use, I thought I would have a tractor that was in better shape with the Kubota.

Good Luck in your search

Horsepower to horsepower, Mahindra is a more heavily built tractor. I don't have gravel, but sand and water in my gully and that spells backhoe. Since you will be playing with gravel, check the loader lift weights on Kubotas and then Mahindras.:) You will be surpriseed at the weights a Mahindra and KMW loader will lift.:D Whichever way you go, get the skid steer quick attach bucket option.
hugs, Brandi

I don't think you can go wrong with any of your choices. Weight doesn't always mean strength; but I believe is based on the quality of metal and casting. Kubota has offered one a choice, if more weight is needed; remember, one can always add weight. If you are going to be operating in the creek itself, the weight may work against you?

I think your HP range is sufficient too!

Mechanic this is the second tread I have seen where you have mentioned selling your property. Why buy a tractor at all if you don't plan on being there more than a year or so. It would seem to me that renting a mini excavator for a day would clear out the creek without having to even get into it.

Good luck,
MarkV

I just got a Mahindra 5525 gear tractor (55 hp engine, 45 hp pto) and it's one heavy, stout beast. It weighs 5370 lb without the FEL and without filled tires. It's all heavy castings, thick steel structure and steel sheet metal. The only plastic is on the seat and the steering wheel. This line of Mahindra tractors traces its beginnings to the IH B414 tractor of the 1960s when IH licensed Mahindra to produce B414 tractors in the Far East.

The ML250 FEL on my tractor has a 6-ft wide bucket, 2980 lb lift capacity to full height and 4905 lb breakout force.

Mahindra's 25-series tractors are 2WD. The 4WD equivalent of my 5525 is the 5530.

I would recommend a tooth bar for your FEL bucket. I found that it helps a lot when scooping up gravel.

I agree with MarkV...... Why buy a tractor when you are selling the place, it will be just one more thing to have to get rid of when someone does buy it.

Or you could buy the tractor and list it:

30hp tractor $200,000 comes with 40 acres, house, shop and a beautiful view.

I want a geared tractor and no hydros.

I think you are missing your chance here.

For the tasks you describe, a HST is the best choice by far. FEL work is much easier with HST.
