case 580C backhoe
I am looking to replace a Delco 20MT starter. I am not having much luck finding one. I have read one ad where it stated that a 28MT will interchange, or supersede, in place of a 20MT. Is this true ? 28MT's appear more available. Thank you, Antiqueynot.

in most cases this is possible can you post your 20mt starter number or application i can look up either way and the 28mt will give you a lot more cranking power

Sorry for delay. I saw further ads which stated that 28MTs could be substituted for 20MTs and 27MTs. The clincher was a listing for a 28MT for a Case application (not backhoe) with a 188 engine, which my backhoe has. I have a starter arriving on Monday afternoon. I will report. By the way, it appears to be a gear-reduction style.

going by your application 580c backhoe it would have come stock with a nippondenso offset gear reduction starter this is different than 28mt planetary gear starter but would interchange do you know if your loader came with 20/27mt starter or is that is what was on it when purchased it. also the denso style gear reduction unit is a far better unit than delco 28mt

What came off this 35 year old backhoe was a Delco Remy 1109149, non gear reduction style starter. This is a 20MT as far as my research showed. I found it almost impossible to find a 20MT for anything approaching a reasonable price, so I went for the 28. The starter that came off had destroyed the brush end, just twisting everything.

ok your info was correct your o/e number will cross to delco 28mt gear reducted starter a nippondenso off set gear reducted starter and may various types of both styles as stated before denso style off set style is best but nothing wrong with 28mt if this is what you are sent 28mt style hooks up like your old 20/27mt denso is different but same if this makes sense good luck

I received the 28MT late this afternoon and so did not have opportunity to install it. I did take photos and check the bolt pattern. All looks good. More tomorrow. Case 580C Starters.jpg

I am having real problems. The starter spins but does not engage the flywheel teeth. I have checked the operation off the machine and the starter gear kicks all the way forward. I have measured all dimensions I can think of. Gear diameter, distance from mounting surface to ring gear and matching dimensions on the starters. I have measured gear diameter, of course counted teeth, everything else I can think of, but still no engagement. Any thoughts ? Thanks Antiqueynot

Mitch, I bought this on Amazon from Rare Electrical -STARTER CASE TRENCHER 580B 580RR 704 DH5 DH5B TF1000 2743536. It was listed as fitting a case 580 with a 188 engine. If I remember correctly it was listed as 12 volt, CW, 10 teeth. I thought that a CCW starter would just turn the engine backwards, guess I don't know my stuff after all. I will look on the starter label tomorrow, I thought it says CW. Thank you very much for the benefit of your knowledge

I looked at a photo I took and the best I can see the label says the following
Model 8583M (This is tough to read in the photo, might not be correct)
Serial AB13H2 Volts 12V
PO0153073001900028
I hope this is some help, thanks again

First, I must say that the customer service from Rare Electrical has been the best. First by email and then 1 phone call, mystery solved. I ordered the wrong starter, I ordered one for a 580B and I should have obtained one for a 580C. They have already emailed an RMA and the man on the phone said he will try to work with the exchange department to see about reducing the price difference. These are probably Chinese or some other Pacific Rim units but the people you deal with are just great. Thanks to all who helped and I apologize for wasting your time with what was solely my mistake.
