Dehumidifier Recommendations

My friend has a damp basement and wants to get a good dehumidifier. Its a sizable cape cod house and the basement is finished. It is fully underground with a door to a set of steps leading up to ground level. Is there a good portable unit that will do the job is it the kind of thing that only a professionally installed model will handle. She has hot water heat so I don't think its anything that can be added to the furnace -- but I really don't know. Thank you for your help.

We have this one and it works extremely well. You can attach a hose and run it to a drain and you don't have to empty it. Or, you can empty it manually. You select the humidity level you want and it will keep it there so that it does not have to run continuously.

We have had 3 inexpensive GE brand dehumidifiers bought at Sam's Club. They work terrific, BUT, the compressors (Chinese made) in two of them have quit and they are uneconomical to repair. Get the 3-year extended warranty and you should be good. They are really just little window air conditioners with a more sophisticated condensate catch system.

We have had this one for about three years: GE® Dehumidifier | ADEL50LR | GE Appliances

It has worked great. We got it reconditioned from Big Lots. I have seen them at Home Depot.

I have a Frigidaire FAD704DWD Energy Star 70-pint Dehumidifier that I purchased from Kmart
three years ago and it has worked fine keeping the humidity under control in my 48' x 26'
full basement. It also has a hose connection on the back to drain the water, eliminating the
need for emptying the container once or twice a day.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me about how much space you are working with?

We currently have ours in our ~1200 sq. ft. basement garage with concrete on 3 sides. It has no trouble keeping it at 50%.

Have one of the GE models from Home Depot, the middle size. Has worked fine for 2+ years so far.

Our basement is roughly 800 sq ft. Also used it in a small house for a while. About 1000 sq ft.
