Tractor
Deere X728 Ultimate
I have a Deere X485 2002 with 600 hours, transmission needs to be replaced.
The cost of the repair is more than the tractor is worth. Has anyone had any issues with Deere X series transmission?
Not sure If I should trade for new or repair, any opinions?

:welcome:

Not had nor heard of issues with the X485. I have a few more hours than that on mine.

What led up to the failure? Any clues, or out of the blue?

Was moving snow with loader and heard a noise and felt slippage then drove it on the trailer and all the fluid blew out a hole in side of housing.

pretty rare failure, but when I do hear of them,
it's usually the tractor with the loaders on them.
i think it is too light of a tractor to be effective
with a loader, and if you need the loader for a lot of
work you might be better off moving to a SCUT.

The tractor is worth basically nothing, I have a lot attachments for the x series and thinking about going to X728.

If you want to sell it as is, PM me. I might be interested.

Dealer wants to give me $1500 for Deere X485 with bad transmission

is that with you keeping the loader/deck and other attachments for the new unit?

What is the cost of the complete transaxle? Can you change it yoursellf? If the machine is in good shape otherwise I would think this would be the lowest cost.

I would think changing the complete transaxle out would be much easier to deal with and would weigh that against the cost of a new machine. At $1500 trade in you would be looking to spend quite a bit buying a new X728 or my preference an X748.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about your tranny will chime in but if it is made by Tuff Torq you may want to inquire with them about a replacement directly.

Whole transmission with PTO (AM128670) around 4000$ from JD.

They would switch over cab, heater, loader and I'll need a different front PTO.

The cost of new is $4100 another $500 misc parts and labor of around $1200.
There is no chance of rebuild.

Dealer has a X728 in stock going to try and make a deal, I really have little choice as far as I can see.

Thank you to all for your great responses.

You always have a choice...

Sounds like the work you have for the tractor might be too much! If that's the case, moving up a couple of tractor sizes in the same series might only be setting the stage for another failure in another couple of years..

Have you considered the new 1000 series tractors?

If you part out your current machine and sell off the various components does the "math" look better?

occasionally I see jd transaxles in the "surplus center" listings. (one advertiser on TBN) don't know if any are the correct one.

There are always people parting out tractors on eBay. I would look around for a while before buying, the grass is not growing...... Yet.

There are 3 transmissions for the X series. The one listed on Ebay is for 4 wheel drive.
The X485 is worth about $3500 - $4000 on trade without mower deck in good running condition.

I think if you have the dealer make the repairs you might as well cough up $10k+ and get a new one. If you can and would consider repairing your existing mower yourself you could do it for alot less, around $3000+, depending on the cost of the transaxle. Haven't looked at or researched whether the transaxle on EBay would work for you but that is the premium 2ws axle and is indicative of what you can find if you look. The actual 2wd transaxle you would wan't should be less.

But if you wan't new with no hassles go for it.

No hassle plus I need to put the tractor back to work. We had a lot of heavy rain the past couple of days and could use loader & sweeper.
I bought tractor new in 2002 from the same Deere dealer that has been around since 1951, they are doing there best to work with me. It does pay to be a loyal customer.

If you need it now, You would likely have to trade. Up Time for needed equipment would be a deciding factor. Let us know how it turned out.
